Bolt Action - Building A Better DAK Army OR How Old Man Morin Built A New Army For MOAB

Well, it is that special “beginning of the tournament season” time of year again.  Last year I attended my first BA tournament at MOAB and had a blast.  I met BA.net regulars Patchimus Prime, Anfernee “The Rocket Man” and Betty’s daddy Bryan Cook and, for the first time, truly exposed myself to the larger Australian BA scene.  I took my Warsaw Uprising Partisans… This year I will be taking the DAK.

Hail to the King (tigers): The Final Army Photos

By Steve MacLauchlan

By now, you're probably tired of hearing about my Remagen King Tiger army. I couldn't let the series flicker out without some posed group shots, though, so here we go!

Review: A Duel Betwixt Us

At Gen Con I managed to snag a copy of A Duel Betwixt Us from Game Salute. With cover art like this, how could I possibly turn it down? A Duel Betwixt Us is a two-player card game with a silly twist.

From the designer's website: A Duel Betwixt Us is a 2-player card game designed to test your manly worth through the ancient & sacred art of violence.

Your heroic feats will earn you the love of fair maidens, and sturdy men join your ranks in admiration of your combative prowess.

You will send this fanclub to work in the mines, where they will toil tirelessly in your name. The fine ingots they pull from the earth will provide you with an economic & military edge in the series of spectacular duels which will unfold betwixt you and your nemesis.

Who will be the finer specimen of Man? Will you gain the Gentlemanly Satisfaction you demand? Only time will tell...

I was already sold. But, let's look inside and see exactly what you get. You get a full color rulebook, chock with examples and detailed instructions.

You also get five pre-folded card boxes to store all of the cards in. They even fit the cards when sleeved!

The goal of the game is to gain more favor with the ladies than your opponent. This is represented by cards with a rose. Each player starts with four, and over the course of the game, you take them from your opponent.

Each player represents a Duelist Persona, such as Baronet Percival Sparkletrout below. The personas are simply aesthetic and have no relevance on game play.

You have miners (you start with five, and gain more as the game goes on). While they all function the same in the game, they each have a unique name and portrait. Some are even zombies.

There is a mining section, with copper, silver, and gold ingots available to mine.

You send your miners to mine the ingots. It takes one miner to mine copper, two miners to mine a silver ingot, and three to gather a gold ingot.

You use these ingots to construct weapons, armor, and pay for abilities.

The card itself forms the "hilt" of the weapon. You construct the weapon with ingots in the manner that the card has the empty yellow slots. So for example, I can add one ingot to this "Close Shaver". In this case, I added a silver ingot. The Close Shaver now has a combat value of two. You cannot use weapons until all of their ingot slots have been completed.

This hammer has three empty slots, so by adding one of each ingot, I give it a combat value of six. Notice that it actually looks like a hammer!

You can also make armor and shields that work defensively. Here, can we put some jewels in a codpiece to protect your jewels.

You can also use ingots to pay for Events. Below is "A Miner Murder" event, where you can kill off one of your opponents loyal miners.

During the game, you fight duels against your opponent. You don't always know which kind of duel you will fight. Different duels require different types of weapons. Both players will bring the same types of weapons to a duel, so one person can't show up with a sword when the other shows up with a hammer.

Some of them even get crazy.

You simply tally up the offensive power of your weapons and reduce it be the defensive value of your opponents armor and shields. Note that you can only count weapons, armor, and shields that the duel allowed you to bring. The victor each takes one of his opponents favors, or gains two additional miners.

In addition, there a tricks you can play during duels. They are like events, but are used dueling the duel itself. Many of them involve concealed weapons.

A Duel Betwixt Us is a fun little game. It has some design issues - one that has been apparent is that once a player starts to win, they tend to runaway with the game, and its hard for the underdog to come back. But nonetheless, it makes for an amusing time.

If you're looking for a serious, competitive two player card game, I'd go elsewhere. But if you're looking for a fun, mustache totin' good time, a Duel Betwixt Us might be right up your alley!

Bolt Action - AAR: Russians vs Germans - Tank War

Had a chance to have a go at a proper Tank War game, this time with a healthy mix of infantry, support, and objectives.   Last time we just ran tanks with no objectives and it turned into two gun lines exchanging fire.  This time there was much more action.
We used the new Tank War Scenerio and rolled up three objectives. These objectives were placed  down the middle of the table, that way no one side had a clear advantage.  The board was fairly open with tall grass and a road with a bombed Soviet column on it. There was a lake shore and a wood on either flank.

Barbrossa Battle: Tankovey Battalion Vs. Medium Panzer Company

By Eric Lauterbach & Luke Melia

Barbarossa has started! Yeah!  Luke and I decided to give it go and test out the new lists.

I started to throw together some forces and I quickly found out if we want a tank on tank fight we need massive points.  So it ended up somewhere in the 2000 to 2400 points on the board but really it looked like a 1500 point Flames of War mid-war battle.

I made both lists out of what forces I had on hand at the time so they are not really optimized combined arms armies. We rolled a random mission got hasty attack and then rolled random for who got to be which side. We made a mistake with who gets to be the defender in the mission we missed that Tankovy is always attack.  Oh well... get it right next time its a first game with these forces.

For the German Medium Panzer Company Luke had 6x Panzer IVs (two in HQ), 10x Panzer IIf (two platoons) and 5 Panzer 38t.

The Soviet Tankovy force was fearless conscript: 5x T-34 (one in Hq), 10x T-26s, 6x Armored Cars BA-6, and 3x AAA trucks.  Both forces with four platoons so it was going to be good fight.

Bolt Action - Speak Easy Episode 28

Speakeasy 28 includes DaveOwaR, Mouth of Madness, and the remotely-participating Judson in an episode recorded in the LRDG's neighborhood. DaveOwaR and Mouth had squared off minutes before the recording, so thoughts from their game is the primary topic of this show. There is a full breakdown of the "New Italians" and some Imperial Japanese back and forth before the Finns are brought up again. This time, Dave's Japanese gets a bit "shooty" and Lachlan's Italians gain a bit of veterancy in the shop talk. Of course, given the involvement of those included, as well as the Speakeasy venue, there is also plenty of weirdness and laughs thrown in for good measure. Enjoy!

(For those that don't know, subscriptions provide access to all WWPD premium content, and Speakeasy represents just a fraction of the whole. - Judson)

Painting the Beute Mark IV, and Great War List Making

By Mitch Reed

While luck has eluded me on the playing table, it did find me for the second week of the"Spot the A7V" Contest that Battlefront held via Twitter.

Since I already have both army box sets I decided to go for the Mark IV box, in order to paint one of the tanks as a captured Mark IV and the other one in standard British colors.  I got the box quickly, 2 days after Battlefront contacted me for my choice and shipping address. A big thanks to Battlefront for having the contest and shipping the item so quickly.

During the battle of Cambrai in November 1917 the British massed about 460 Mark IV tanks in their attack which initially pushed the German lines back.  As the attack stalled the Germans counterattacked and came into possession of numerous Mark IV tanks that were either knocked out or abandoned due to mechanical breakdowns.

From these captured tanks the Germans pressed 40 into service the as the Beutepanzerwagen (Beute meaning "booty" in German), forming 4 companies of these captured tanks in December 1917.  The Germans increased the crew to 12 (British used 8) and replaced many of the 6-pdr guns on the Male version of the tank with German guns in order to better supply it with ammunition.

The remaining federation ship then continued its pursuit of the Klingon vessel.

After locking on to the Klingon ship it fired a full spread of phasers, destroying the Klingon.

Federation Summary
After arriving in the system we came under attack from an unknown number of Klingon War Ships.  The Miranda and most of the survivors from the science team were killed.  However one of the lead scientist managed to survive.  The Enterprise suffered significant damage to its engines and hull and the crew were forced to abandon the ship.  About 40% of the crew survived including most of the senior officers.  She will likely take months to repair.  In total two Klingon ships were destroyed.  We still don't know what they were doing so deep in Federation space."

Klingon Report
Contact with the task force sent to Dio was lost.  The listening post picked up signs of a large battle.  It is safe to assume they will not be returning.  Notify the Chancellor that he can expect a visit from the Federation Ambassador before the end of the day.
