Viet-Nam, 1952, France vs Viet-Minh, Force-on-Force (Fall-In 2016)

I was able to make the drive down from Canada to Lancaster, PA for Fall-In 2016 this year.  While my main goal was to see old friends, buy more miniatures I don't need, and play in the Flames of War singles tournament put on by Kurt Reese for Wounded Warrior Project, I did have a spare day to partake in some other games!

Anyone who has been to an HMGS convention knows that with the small description of the game in the convention book, it can be tough to discern if the game will be any good.  As soon as I saw the jungle table, I knew I had to try and play it!

This one features French forces landing from the carrier group "Arromanches" near Hue, in order to clear out a 'ville' of some pesky Viet-Minh.  It used Force-on-Force rules, 28mm scale, and was being run by Pete English.   The game/table also won some award, as the convention organisers paused our game to hand out a prize and take pictures and all that!  As the only actual person on either side who is French (Cdn) I obviously chose to be on the French team!

The 'ville' had only civilians visible, working the rice paddies, though we knew they had a box full of soldiers yet to be seen.  As the french, we had an LVT4 Amtrac,  2 Chaffees, 3 mech platoons initially as tank riders, an Amphib command jeep and 2 M20s.

French vs Germans in Counter Attack

Jon has been working diligently on his Early War Germans, and we finally got together to put them on the table.  I decided to let him first face the French infantry, and so left the SOMUAs and Char B1s at home.  Ditto Laffleys and Panhards!  We rolled for the mission and came up with Counter Attack.  So crappy trained infantry vs a horde of tanks?  Uh oh.

List Dissection: French Escadron De Combat

With the recent changes to the French in FoW, their armor has become very good.  I've been a fan of the Frenchies from the get-go so I figured it was time they got their time in our list dissection spotlight!  I've decided to make an Escadron De Combat so I can have a large number of the excellent SOMUAs running amok.  German players beware!  I'll build towards 1500 points.

Let's start with the core:
HQ: 1x SOMUA S-34 (105)
No brainer, eh?

Peter Pig French Infantry

Guest post by Tom B. AKA "VonBurge from TMP".  Thanks Tom!

When Flames of War released “Blitzkrieg” I was very excited to start up a Early War French Tank Force. I always loved the look of the Soumas, Hotchkiss, and Renault tanks and BattleFront was producing some excellent models of them. That was all good news for me but the bad news was that the Early War French Infantry and Gunners have to be about the worst sculpts that Battlefront ever produced. They just would not do!!!

So I looked at alternatives for infantry and gunner figures to provide my tanks the proper support they needed.  I first looked to Old Glory/Command Decision miniatures.  The Old Glory miniatures seemed suitable enough,  but it did not appear that their infantry packs included necessary VB Rifle Grenades miniatures and the packing (by 50’s) would mean some waste when adding in the LMG to the teams. Forged in Battle had some nice Early War French infantry, but no artillery crews to go with them. So ultimately I turned to Peter Pig to get the infantry and gunners I needed.

French Compagnie De Combat vs German Mittlere Panzers!

Sean and I hadn't played an Early War battle in quite a while, and so decided to give it a shot. Because I forced Sean to take my newly painted kradschutzen in any list he ran, I gave him a few extra points to account for their shakedown cruise. The French list was rolled for at the beginning of the game from a list of 6. Unfortunately, I think this meant the match up was left somewhat unexciting. The battle itself was not terribly exciting either, though it did generate some pretty pictures! So with that in mind, I am not doing the standard battle report format, instead highlighting just the photographs.

The mission is The Cauldron.

Steven's Compagnie De Combat
  • HQ: 1 Char B1
  • 3x Char B1
  • 3x Hotchkiss H39 (long)
  • 3x Hotchkiss H39 (long)

French Escadron de Combat vs Mittlere Panzers!

Tom and I were eager to try out our old rivalry matchup in the form of the Mittlere Panzers and the Escadron De Combat under the new V3 rules. We rolled randomly for both scenario and for who would run what! I ended up running the French, and Tom the Germans. The mission is Hold the Line, and the French are attacking.

INFO SUMMARY
NOTES
This battle went on for many many turns, so it's not going to have a turn by turn breakdown. Instead, I will break it down by the early game, mid game, and late game. Also, I'd just like to say that the iPhone 4S takes great pics. It was really quite dark in there and it adjusted very well.

CREDITS
All of the German models are Battlefront Miniatures. All of the French infantry & guns are Battlefront Miniatures except the 25mm AT guns which are Old Glory. The French armor is all Peter Pig. Both armies were painted by me (Steven)

Buildings by Crescent Root. Swamps, river, and bridges by Battlefront/Gale Force 9. Explosion Markers by Paper Terrain. Kill Markers (Pizzas) by Litko Aerosystems.

DEPLOYMENT & EARLY GAME

As the Germans, I combat attached my HMGs giving me 6 platoons. I started with both of the gigantic infantry units (now with 14 stands!), and the mortars. Tom started with 2 infantry, the 75s, AT guns, and HMGs. Objectives are at the Y intersection and the hill in the bottom. The wheat field and the building to the top left of the T in the top.

German infanterie on both flanks with mortars in the middle. Tom has infantry, HMGs, and AT Guns in town in the top left. Infantry and guns + HQ in the top right.

FEC Goums vs Panzergrenadiers in Italy

TOM'S FEC GOUMIER (Cassino)
  • HQ
  • Full Goum Platoon
  • Full Goum Platoon
  • Full Goum Platoon
  • Goum Weapons Platoon

  • Full Panzergrenadier Platoon
  • Full Panzergrenadier Platoon
  • Panzergrenadier Heavy Platoon (4 HMGs, 2 Mortars)
  • Nebelwerfers
  • Scout Patrol (3 MG teams)
  • 4 HMG nests + 4 barbed wire

Oh boy. Two lists with fortifications, and the mission is Free For All. Welcome to World War I!

Due to the static nature of this game, a full turn by turn AAR would probably be somewhat boring. Instead, I will just post the pictures after a brief summary.

GAME SUMMARY

Basically, the battle was a standoff for a long time. Artillery hammered on each other, and we both made feints and pushes up the flanks. My nebelwerfers pinned Tom's 105s, who failed to unpin for 6 or 7 turns, which really allowed my troops to move around unmolested.

Finally, two Panzergrenadier platoons were able to assault Tom's Left Flank guarded by a single Goum platoon plus his artillery. One of the Panzergrenadier units broke, but the 2nd was on fire, passing numerous morale checks! They eventually ran the Goums, and started their turn holding the objective. Each of us lost one unit.

View from the German lines.

German side: objectives are in the bottom left (below the treeline), and the bottom right (on the road).
Goum side: Objectives in the large wood in the top center, and just to the north of the wood on the right side.

Czech Panzers vs French Reserve Infantry!

STEVEN'S RESERVE FRENCH
  • HQ + Mortars + AT Guns
  • Rifle Platoon 1 w/ attached AT Guns
  • Rifle Platoon 2
  • Rifle Platoon 3
  • Divisional AT
  • HMG Platoon
  • 155 Battery
  • 75mm Battery
  • British Guards Rifle Platoon
  • 4x HMG Bunkers + 8 Barbed Wire + 1 AT Trap

BRIAN'S CZECH PANZERKOMPANIE
  • HQ
  • 4x Czech Panzers
  • 4x Czech Panzers
  • 5x Panzer II C Early
  • Leichte Panzers: 1 PzIIC Early, 4x PzI
  • Panzerschutzen
  • 2 tube 105 Battery

The Blitzkrieg is in full effect! Losses from the previous battle in the town of Petite Exterieurs still burn in the streets. Reluctant French infantry have been told to hold for as long as they can, as the sounds of diesel engines approach!

The Mission is Fighting Withdrawal. Like our previous game, I am not going to write a turn by turn. Let me say this- this game had some sentimental value as it may be me and Brian's last game! He is moving to California at the end of the month. He shall be missed!

GAME SUMMARY

DEPLOYMENT: Steven deploys the majority of his force in the huge wheat field where all 3 objectives reside. Brian actually placed both of his objectives side by side! Steven boxed himself in under the watchful eye o the 155s, 75s, HMGs, 2 HMG bunkers, infantry with attached AT, and the HQ mortars. Two infantry platoons were deployed in the Western part of the board. The Divisional AT guns are in ambush.

Brian kept all of his czech panzers and Panzer IIs focused on the wheat field, while he sent his leichte panzers and Panzerschutzen wide, in an effort to sweep into the French defenses.

Early on, there is a shootout between tanks and 75s. Eventually the 75s wipe out the Panzer IIs, but are lost in return. The 155s never do anything of import, and are eventually picked apart by 38(t)s. The leichte panzers chew up a platoon in the West outside "the wire". French infantry further west is pulled back in withdrawal.

The British Guards hold out vs 3 assaults, but are eventually vanquished as objectives begin being removed.

In the end, both attacker's objectives are removed with only the "primary" objective remaining. The reluctant french are completely surrounded, and out of their fox-holes eating bullets. In the end, however, Brian is one turn too late to nab the objective, and his only hope is breaking the french company. Fortunately, the company commander lives! And the result of the motivation check is? A 5. The French hold on with only 1 AT gun, and the HMGs remaining.

Such an incredibly tense and close game- it's why I love Fighting Withdrawal so much! Brian was a true ace- Rommel would've been proud. However, just one turn behind the withdrawal, after spending too long trading fire with 75s.

Special Note!!!: Those GORGEOUS flame/smoke markers on the burning wrecks from the previous battle were very generously given to us by Shawn Morris of The Terrainguy fame. Make sure to check out his amazing videos here: http://theterrainguy.blogspot.com/

French Laffly W15 TCC Self Propelled AT Guns

Just got these guys assembled and painted over the weekend. To be honest, it was fairly difficult. They were quite fiddly, and the box was missing one of the guns. As noted by "Buckaroo" over at All Miniatures Great and Small, the helmets of the drivers were too tall to fit the top of the cab on! That was quite frustrating as I didn't notice until I was nearly done (I painted the crew separately). But, they look neat in a "Ork Battlewagon" way, and I can't wait to field them!

German Schutzen vs French Escadron De Reconaissance Brief AAR

BRIAN'S SCHUTZEN
  • HQ + Rommel
  • Full Schutzen, MG upgrade
  • Full Schutzen
  • Light Pioneers
  • Mixed Recon
  • 4x 38(T)
  • 2x 105s
  • Stuka Schwere'

STEVEN'S ESCADRON DE RECONAISSANCE
  • HQ Panhard
  • 5x Panhards
  • 5x Panhards
  • 5x Panhards
  • 3x Recon Hotchkiss
  • 5x SOMUAs
  • Active Infantry
  • Mortars
  • 75 Battery
  • Air interception

This is a fairly brief AAR. I had the board setup and left over from the previous battle in the heavy french terrain, and wanted to run my Nationals list against some infantry in a difficult scenario. Brian obliged with his Schutzen and we rolled up Breakthrough!

Below, I will post all of the pictures, but I am not going to give a blow by blow, instead I will summarize the entire battle here:

Basically, I split my attack into two fronts. The first was down the center with Panhards, and Hotchkiss. The other on my left with SOMUAs and infantry. In reserve I had 1 panhard platoon (it never showed, but we only played 5 turns).

Brian helpd me up solidly- maintaining the cross-roads with schutzen. And boxing me in on my left with schutzen and HMGs. His artillery was watching the approach on the left, and his pioneers and recon moved forward to the objective. He had 38(T)s in reserve.

The attack was going decently, but a few rough turns occured- I lost 5 panhards in an assault against schutzen for very little loss to Brian. My infantry actually performed well, but ground themselves down (easy to do with 8 confident trained infantry!).

The big assault came on turn 5, thinking it would be the turn to make my breakthrough. But instead, the forest ate most of my SOMUAs and company command right in the face of pioneers lead by Rommel. At that point, I was tired (very busy weekend!), plus the game had gone on for a bit and I didn't want to watch my boys cut down horrendously, so I called the game for Brian, in a 5-2.

Brian had a great deployment (which is something I know he's worked on!), and did a great job of holding me up. I pushed my troops a bit too hard given the terrain and deployment, and also didn't concentrate enough. All in all it was an enjoyable game, and good to come up against a nightmare scenario with my nats list! I still think the list has extreme merit, especially when I have some maneuvering room. But congrats to Brian and taking on what I consider a very mean list, and coming out on top!

Here are the pictures. The turns are delineated by the overhead shots!

German Panzers vs French Reserve (Reluctant!) Infantry!

Last night I set up an absolutely sadistic terrain board for an infantry on infantry battle with Brian. Unfortunately, Brian had to bail at the last second, so Sean manned up and took command. We decided to do an early war battle. I don't quite have enough German infantry to do a full company for EW, so we decided that we'd do Panzers vs reluctant french. This is Rommel's Ghost Division pushing deep into the enemy lines, and the french are reeling from the Blitzkrieg!

To represent the hurried nature of the German forces, we went with "Hasty Assault".

STEVEN'S FRENCH RESERVE INFANTRY
  • HQ + Mortars (60mm + 2x 81mm) + 2x 25mm AT Guns
  • French Reserve Infantry Platoon
  • French Reserve Infantry Platoon
  • French Reserve Infantry Platoon
  • British Guards Rifle Platoon
  • French Reserve Horse Drawn 75mm Battery
  • French Reserve 155mm Heavy Artillery Battery
  • French Reserve Divisional AT Platoon (2x 47mm Guns)
  • Deep Recon Platoon
  • Sporadic Air Interception
  • 2x HMG Bunkers

SEAN'S MITTLERE PANZERKOMPANIE
  • HQ (Panzerbef. + 2 Early Panzer II C)
  • 5x Panzer II C (early)
  • 5x Panzer II C (early)
  • 5x Panzer II C (early)
  • 2x Panzer IV D
  • 2x 8-Rad
  • Leicthe Pioneers (Full)
  • Stuka Schwerepunkt

As you can see, we aren't really a set point value. 1500ish.

TURN ONE AND DEPLOYMENT

In Hasty Assault, the Defenders (French, duh) get half off the board in delayed reserves and one immediate ambush. The French deployed 75s (in the top left), 155s (top center), Guards Rifles (guarding the artillery), and a platoon of French rifles with attached 25mm guns in ambush. The objectives are in the top center plowed field, and the top right- stuck recovery vehicle. The Germans have an objective in their board edge in the bottom center field.

Sean also had half of his stuff in reserve. He started with Panzer IVs, Panzer IIs, and Pioneers in the bottom right (mostly out of frame- sorry about that!)

French Compagnie De Combat vs Mittlere Panzerkompanie

Tom and I played an absolutely ridiculous game tonight. The batrep is going to devolve into many many back and forth turns and you'll see why. What a matchup! I tried to squeeze in as many of the finished German units I have- recently finished the Stukas, Panzer IVs, and 8-rads!

TOM'S FRENCH COMBAT COMPANY
  • HQ (Hotchkiss long)
  • 3x Char B1 Bis
  • 3x Char B1 Bis
  • 3x Hotchkiss (1 long)
  • 4x SOMUA S-35

STEVEN'S MITTLERE PANZERKOMPANIE
  • HQ (1x Panzer IVd, 1x Panzer II C (early))
  • 5x Panzer II C early
  • 5x Panzer II C early
  • 5x Panzer II C early
  • 2x Panzer IVd
  • 2x Panzer IVd
  • Stuka Schwerepunkt

So, a really ridiculous matchup- especially considering we rolled BREAKTHROUGH! We decided to re-roll it, and rolled breakthrough again, so decided it was fate. Tom "won" the roll to be the attacker.

My favorite Sundays are when Brian comes over early for a game- it forces me to wake up early, and what better way to start your day than Flames of War?

I set up the board, and rolled on my newly completed French "list of lists" to let the decide decide what I'd run! I rolled up some Fusiliers Des Portes, and the mission was Cauldron.

"The Cauldron".

With that, Brian's force is below half strength with no company commander. 4-3 to the french.

CLOSING

First off- I always set my board up with the goal of making a cool looking terrain board. But I have to say- this set up and mission combination was rough for Brian thanks to my 75s, who pretty much single handedly held the line. Still, Brian had be goin- my SOMUAs were at half, 2 fusilier platoons were gone, and we was pushing both objectives.
