Bolt Action: Australian Militia Painting Guide

By Bryan,

Hi guys, welcome to another step by step painting guide for some 28mm WW2 miniatures, this time it's for the Australian Militia who fought in the South West Pacific in 1942. This guide is designed to be a simple and efficient way to paint a platoon's worth of miniatures rather quickly. This is for the Australians initial Khaki Drill uniform they first deployed to the theater in, the specialized Jungle Green uniforms came later at the end of 1942-43. I have done a guide previously for these later green uniforms here. You can use this guide for British 8th Army in the desert as well, just swap the helmet colour to a sand rather than green. Right, on with the guide!

Step 1 - Add base texture

After cleaning up the flash and mould lines on your metal miniatures, use superglue to attach them to their plastic bases. The Warlord Games plastic round bases feature a lip around the edge of the design to allow the metal tab at the models feet to sink into them slightly. However, it's still a good idea to fill the base up with some material to hide this and add some texture for later. You can simply use sand an PVA glue for this, but I find it doesn't hide the metal tab well.

I prefer to use Polyfilla (or any gap or crack filling product) from a hardware store and simply smear it across the base, using a toothpick or sculpting tool to poke it about. In a single step this fills up the base, hides the metal tab and creates a rough earth-like texture. The result should look like below.

Bolt Action - Playing an event with the Official Australian Supplement

The Australians in the South West Pacific 1942-45 official supplement was launched almost a year ago now as a free download on the Warlord Games website. As a co-author of this document, assisting the amazing Master Bryan Cook, I was really hopeful we would see more Australian forces on the table but they have been a bit sparse. With a New Guinea campaign book due to be released later this year (hopefully soon!). I thought it was time to roll my Jungle warriors out and promote the supplement once more and hopefully prompt some interest in playing these venerable forces.

Bolt Action - Reviewing The New Pacific Australian Range By Eureka Miniatures

With all the excitement of the upcoming new Bolt Action Pacific campaign book later this year it is natural that folks are starting to plan forces around new models, lists and forces enclosed in that book. While we have not seen the exact contents yet, Warlord has made it clear that the Australians will be fully represented and have just released a box of 10 excellent new models for perspective Australian players to collect. Coinciding with release of these exciting new rules Eureka Miniatures has released an entire new range of jungle humping Aussies for us to round out our forces.

Bolt Action: Australian Commandos Review & Painting Guide

By Bryan

G'day fellas! Warlord Games has finally released the first of it's Australian range in the form of the Independent Company Commandos. The miniatures are fantastic sculpts, very accurate and a pleasure to paint. Read on and I'll go over the boxed set in a little more detail, as well as a step by step painting guide you can follow to paint your own Aussies.

The boxed set contains a full strength section of Australian Independent Company Commandos, being 10 men. They are equipped in a historically typical fashion with 6 sub machine guns, 1 Bren light machine gun and 4 Lee Enfield rifles. One of those rifles has a scope and the sub machine guns are the iconic, Australian designed and made Owen Gun. These really help to give the models that Australian look.

The sculptor, the talented Steve Saleh, has taken this further by really paying close attention to period photos of the men he is representing in miniature. Take a look at this photo on the left and you'll see what I mean. He has managed to capture the rugged look of the men of these units. They often sported beards as they would be out on 12 day long patrols in the jungle, behind Japanese lines.

The style of beret worn by the Australian Commando units is also slightly different to their more well known British counterparts. Less a sign of elite status and more a practical piece of jungle head gear, the miniatures again capture that individualistic approach to uniform regulations in the Australian Independent Companies.

The sculpting is fantastic, and the equipment and uniforms are accurate, so I give these 5 out of 5 Owen Guns. The models are all single piece sculpts and do not have separate heads. Okay, onto how to paint your Pacific Australians.

Bolt Action - Modelling Jungle Tanks Tutorial

By Bryan,

Modelling tanks up for a jungle setting offers a lot of modelling and painting opportunities. Often these tanks have field modifications and unique stowage, and of course there is the extreme weathering due to the environment to play with. I've recently added a troop of Matilda II tanks to my Australian platoon in New Guinea, which I will use as an example. This guide is also great for British 14th Army vehicles in Burma and US vehicles across the Pacific.

Bolt Action - AAR: Australian vs. Hungarians, Envelopment

Recently I had a 1000 point game against a friend of mine named Mikey and his Australians. I was using my Hungarians, although neither of us used the BAA PDFs for these forces (both of our army lists were older ones we had written up on Easy Army before either PDF had been released). We randomly rolled which scenario we would play from the rulebook missions and got Envelopment. I got the choice and decided to be the attacker for a change, leaving Mikey to defend. The table was set, the battle lines drawn and little did we know, but Bolt Action was definitely set to happen in this game.

The first 12" of either side of the table had very little in the way of hard cover, so my opponent deployed quite far forward, planning on moving up to the hard cover and trying to hold me back, as I tried to run my army of his table edge. I decided to not outflank with anything, as it's a bit of a lame way to try and win Envelopment, so I bought everything on in the first wave. We rolled for the prep bombardment and I did a smattering of pins and killed a single Commando with the artillery fire.

Bolt Action - Community listing with the new Australian Army Supplement

By Patch

Last week the new Australian Army Supplement (can be found here or in our downloads section) was released by Warlord Games with an extremely positive reception. It was written and designed by Bryan, with my meager assistance, along with some fantastic input from other members of the community and given the official stamp of approval by Alessio himself.

Bolt Action - Pacific Native Irregulars

By Bryan & Patch

The Empires in flames campaign book for the Pacific and Far East introduced some new and interesting units for the Allied and Japanese armies. One available to all armies is the 'Native Irregulars' infantry squad. This unit is deliberately designed to cover all manner of locally recruited forces throughout the Pacific and Far East. One such unit I have decided to paint up for my Australian army is the Papuan Infantry Battalion.

Bolt Action - Day 2 Wintercon 2015 - 1250 Point Australian Late War List

This is the second in my three part series where I discuss the forces I am taking to Wintercon in Canberra in July this year. The first force for day one can be found here and is a German Blitzkrieg themed army with a lot of mobility. For day two of Wintercon the field is a bit more open with no restriction based on time periods so I have decided to go with a late war Australian list. This is rather fitting that I am talking about my Australian force at this time as 25 April is ANZAC day here in Australia. A day that we pause to remember our fallen soldiers and those that have served in all our conflicts.

Bolt Action - AAR: Desert War

Welcome to the scorching desert of North Africa Bolt Action fans! Recently the LRDG podcast crew got together for a big group game. The 4 of us each fielded a 1250pt army each, so 2500 pts a side! We loosely based the game around the second battle of El Alamein in late 1942, with this sector seeing the Allies (Free French and Australians) taking on the Italian defenders. The result to was too good not to share.

Bolt Action - AAR: Australians vs Germans in Point Defence

Recently I played a game of Point Defence with my own Nemesis J that is worthy of an After Action Report (AAR) if for nothing else than highlighting just how badly I can roll moral checks. Before we get to that though let’s talk about the 1000 point lists.

The scene is set.

Bolt Action - Review: Wartime Miniatures Australians in Kokoda Range

Recently Wartime Miniatures here in Australian have released a range of Australian Soldiers, commonly known as Diggers, in 28mm scale. These miniatures are themed on the Diggers who fought the Kokoda campaign in 1942, a campaign that saw the cessation of the Japanese advance southwards and the start of the withdrawal back towards the home islands. For Japan this would be the closest they would get to mainland Australia.

Members of the 39th on parade, the officer in front has an uncanny resemblance to the officer in the below picture.

Bolt Action - ANZAC Day, Lest We Forget

This morning, many of your fellow Bolt Action hobbyists, namely those from Australia and New Zealand woke up and joined the hundreds of thousands of other ordinary people of all ages in the cold darkness and rain before dawn, gathering at local ceremonies, large and small. Why? Well, to remember those men and women who served in war.

On ANZAC day, the two nations take time to remember all those lost in war, as well as thank those who lived through it and carry its scars still. Although it’s a military day, it’s not used to glorify victories in battle, but acknowledge the sacrifices made by ordinary men and women as well as build bridges with enemies of the past. We remember all those who suffered in war.

Bolt Action - Painting Commonwealth Forces in the Desert

Howdy gang! The past couple of months have seen me locked in a bitter painting war with my brand new army: An Australian desert force from the famous 9th Division. The army was initially themed around the defence of Tobruk but has since subtly sprawled and now could now happily take part in most of the major battles in which the Australians fought in Africa. The aim is for this army to be done by Easter weekend – aka Conquest! The models are from the Desert Rats box by Perry Miniatures. Nemesis A did a great review on these a little while back – well worth checking out.

Bolt Action - Australians in the Pacific

(Hey BARbarians! Enjoy this amazing article from Bryan, BoltAction.Net new talent, as he walks you through his incredibly painted Australians and their performance at Cancon. - Judson)

This is my first army for Bolt Action, and part of why I starting playing this game. I’ve always wanted to paint up an Australian army for the Pacific, and Bolt Action's scope and scale are really well suited to fighting battles in this theatre of WW2. My aim was to paint an initial 1000-point army and enter my first tournament with it in January; Cancon in Canberra Australia. I had three months to get the project finished in time to play!
