Dirty Jon's Basic Tips for Painting Miniatures

In this article, I will set out some of my top beginner tips for painting 15mm miniatures for Flames of War.  I will be focusing on achieving good effects for playable models, and not trying to get you winning painting contests.  When one paints hundreds of tanks per year like I do, the focus really is on getting those miniatures on the table top.  I generally ink my figures, so I will assume you are doing that too -- it really does save time and give a good effect.

Preparation

You have your models purchased, so now what?  I recommend painting a playable unit like a platoon all at once. The next thing to do is to pick your color scheme and gather your paints.  The books published by Battlefront usually have a good guide - with specific paints - in the back for infantry and tanks.  I would also search out the Osprey books, which have really good color plates that you can match up to your paints.  Here are some prep tips:
  1. Use cheap black spray paint as primer - sue me, white primer fans!  $1 at big box stores.  Black lets you make mistakes on small infantry figures and have no one notice.
  2. Take the time to really trim all the flash off of your figures!  Nothing ruins a paint job more effectively than horrible flash lines.  Take the time up front and clean those figs!
  3. Brush off the white-ish dust (release agent) on the figures, if present.  I have never really had much of a problem with this, but when I do see the stuff I use a stiff brush or a quick wash with soapy water before priming.
  4. Paint a platoon at a time. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and encouragement to continue.  It will also help tie the platoon together as a unit.  Even if using the same techniques and materials, it is difficult to exactly replicate a paint job.
  5. Order/buy everything you need before starting!

Bolt Action - Speed Kills: A Discussion Of Mobility In Bolt Action Armies

Greetings and Salutations gang,

Old Man Morin here with some thoughts about building an atypical army list: a mobile one. I recently took a fairly mobile list to the BA tournament at MOAB as a bit of an experiment and came 3rd.  My original idea revolved around an army in which every unit was a vehicle or a unit of troops mounted in a transport. I'll admit I chickened out a bit and dropped a few transports to make a list that was 50% move and hit and 50% static "rock".

Bolt Action - Modeling German SPG Crew Using Wargames Factory Germans.

I recently got on a role converting Wargames Factory plastic Germans into crew for my German self propelled gun (SPG) collection.  I have always hated opened top self propelled guns with ghost crew look.  I want my models to look alive and full of action, I want my SPGs to look less like a tonka truck and more like the WW2 pictures and and documentaries I grew up with.  I am also as addicted to modeling and painting as I am to playing, so this kind of stuff is up my alley.

Product Review: Battlefront's Stoss Platoon

By Mitch Reed

One of the Great War platoons I was eager to have in my collection was the German Stoss Platoon.  The actual name of these forces was Stosstruppen which means "Storm Trooper" and represent Germany's late war answer to break the deadlock on the Western Front in 1918. These troops used infiltration tactics when attacking and bypassed forward enemy strong points in order to penetrate deep into the rear areas and attack artillery positions, supply points and headquarters.  The a major attack Stoss units were followed up by regular troops which had the duty to reduce the bypassed pockets of resistance.  Stosstruppen were usually formed into battalions that were assigned to infantry divisions and were in the first wave across from key enemy positions.  Along with the use of tanks, the Stosstruppen represent how the Great War ushered in a new type of warfare in the 20th Century.

The Stoss Platoon is available as a support platoon on the German Infantry Company list for 305 points for a full unit.  You can upgrade the command pistol team to a SMG team for 5 points and add a flamethower stand for an additional 45 points.  The Stoss Platoon are also the only unit rated as Fearless Veteran in the Great War game so far.  A full Stoss Platoon is composed of one command and six pistol  "Sturm"teams, with two MG teams.  The platoon has some great benefits, SMG and pistol teams hit on 2+ in assault combat, Tank Assault 3 rating,  and they do use the Mission Tactics special rule.  One possible drawback (besides the cost) is that if your force has the Stoss Platoon it becomes an Always Attacks list, however if you are the attacker your Stoss Platoon and all infantry platoons may make a Spearhead Deployment move at the beginning of the game.  The special rules really capture how these were used and what they were capable of very well.

Bolt Action - Review: Black Tree Design Tank Crew

For a while now I have been eyeballing the dismounted German and Soviet tank crew from Black Tree Design.  I finally added a bag of each to my cart after the release of Tank War.  In Tank War there are rules for crew to be used when a Tank gets knocked out.  If you are running a Tank War campaign this is important because surviving crew retain their experiences and upgrade, while dead crew, uh well, they do not.  Additionally my creative left brain can think of a few hundred ways to incorporate dismounted tank crew into regular games or homemade scenarios.   Maybe they are the objective in Top Secret, or they are mixed into your partisans or defenders of Berlin.  Whatever you use them for dismounted tank crew give you options and flavor.

LotR: LCG Nin-in Eilph Adventure Pack Review - Part 1

I was shocked, shocked to find that my FLGS was able to stock the most recent release for the LotR:LCG on time. The Nin-in-Eilph is the fourth adventure pack to be released for the Ring-Maker cycle, and is a strong contender for the most unpronounceable title for a release. As with prior reviews, we will start by highlighting the new hero and some of the player cards before diving into the quest itself in Part 2.

So far this cycle has blessed players with a strong slate of heroes. The Voice of Isengard deluxe box gave us Eomer and Grima, both of whom are strong in their own way. They were followed by Celeborn in the Dunland Trap, which set the stage for the development of the entire Silvan trait. The Three Trials then gave us Idraen, who added some muscle to the Spirit sphere and also became a key player in location-control decks. The last release, Trouble in Tharbad, saw the debut of hero Haldir, who is getting better and better as the Silvan trait develops and players learn the best combos and heroes to pair him with.

Following in the footsteps of a hero lineup like that isn't easy, especially when we know that Galadriel is going to be released next. Let's take a look at who has now been added to our repertoire of heroes:

At 10 threat, and with 2 willpower/attack/defense, Mablung is a well-rounded hero in a sphere that typically features specialization in its heroes. He has the Gondor (yay!) and Ranger traits, and a nifty special ability. In the books Mablung was part of Faramir's company of Rangers. He survived both the Battle of Osgiliath and the Siege of Minas Tirith, and scouted ahead of the allied armies as they marched on the Black Gate. His ultimate fate is unknown.

One major caveat that we have to consider when reviewing Mablung is his Ranger trait. The game designers have already announced that the next cycle will really flesh out the Ranger trait, so it is likely that Mablung will benefit from a cycle's-worth of attention in the future. For all we know he could become the best hero in the game if any crazy Ranger attachments/events are released in the future - we just don't know.

Perhaps a peek into the Mirror of Galadriel could enlighten us

Generating resources could make him a great target for Gondorian Fire and Blood of Numenor, but my instinct is that those cards are better used on someone like Boromir or Eomer (once Eomer is given the Steward of Gondor). Another problem lies with the timing of his resource generation, because it makes cards like Steed of the Mark irrelevant for him. That said, it would allow a player to spend all of his resources elsewhere before then being able to play Feint or Quick Strike after having engaged an enemy.

I'm fully prepared to eat my words in the future, but my verdict on Mablung is that he's a decent hero that simply doesn't break through to the upper tier of tactics heroes. There are some combos that could work with him, and pairing him with the Horn of Gondor certainly creates an excellent resource engine. If he were 9 threat then he'd be much better, but here are two other tactics heroes that you can get for 10 threat:

Nobody doubts the utility of Eomer and Beregond, because they're each masters at what they do. Eomer attacks like a madman, and Beregond is the immovable object that enemies batter themselves upon. Currently Mablung is someone I put on the same level as Hama: decent, but not great.

Onto some of the player cards that I'm most looking forward to using:

Wingfoot - Now this is a card that could help Mablung! Presumably, the only reason you'd need Mablung to ready after questing is if you needed to smash an enemy. If I got this attachment on Mablung then I would simply name 'enemy' as its trigger - if only locations or treacheries are revealed then no big deal, but if an enemy is revealed then I'll have Mablung ready to go without having wasted his two willpower. I will also fit this into my Lore Aragorn decks for the exact same reason.

Celduin Traveler - The guys at Team Covenant recently posted an excellent review of this guy. He is definitely a counterpart to Ithilien Lookout, and needless to say that he will probably be finding his way into many location-control decks. Anything that allows you to look at the top card of the encounter deck has tremendous value, especially for solo play.

Galadhon Archer - This is probably my MVP card from the pack. He was recently spoiled via the team at Couple vs Cardboard, and right away I began proxying him into my decks. For two cost he is simply incredible. He pairs very well with Celeborn so he can deal damage upon entering play and then swing for three attack in the combat phase, using his ranged ability to help out other players if needed. Again, what astounds me about this card is that it only costs two resources. Editor's note: Or even 1 if you have Celeborn with O' Lorien! -Steven

Follow Me! - A very subtle card that allows another player to take control of the first player token. This can come in handy in a number of situations, too many to list here. It also gives the Leadership sphere a little card draw. And, to boot, I enjoy the art.

Bow of the Galadhrim - Remember earlier in the article when I talked about getting good attachments for Haldir? This is a great little attachment that can take Haldir and Legolas to further heights of destructiveness. I see this card replacing the Dagger of Westernesse in a lot of Silvan decks, since the attack boost isn't conditional upon the enemy's engagement cost.

Thanks for reading! Stay tuned for Part 2 of this review where we will dive into the cool quest mechanics for The Nin-in-Eilph. You can follow all of the WWPD Fellowship's activities on Twitter, and also listen to our brand new podcast!

Bolt Action - Late War French Army Project

Patch's New Army Project, More French!

Commencing on 15 August 1944, a number of American Infantry Divisions from VI Corps supported by the French First Army B, launched amphibious assaults against the Southern French Coastline codenamed Operation Dragoon. This operation was a significant role for the Free French forces in the liberation of mainland France, although their achievements seem to be constantly overshadowed by their US and Commonwealth allies.

Crescent Root's New Pre-Painted Desert Building Line

Long time readers of WWPD will know that I am a huge fan of the Crescent Root buildings. The bulk of my collection is CR's excellent pre-painted buildings and scenery. Just check out our previous reviews of Crescent Root stuff if you need reminding of their products: church and church-grounds, town base.

This time around, we're reviewing their new desert building line. Their desert buildings were the first purchases I made from them, and had me hooked. Now, however, they have entered a whole new ballpark! The buildings are no longer resin, and are instead laser-cut MDF.

Bolt Action - AAR: Tanks in the City

I live for days I get to put my rubble based soldiers on a city board.  GI Joe and Colby came over for a Bolt Action FTX and Joe brought his new city mat from Frontline Games.  This thing is pure gold and looks fantastic.  After he rolled it out we all knew we had to get a game in on it.  So after our first game we busted out all the building goodies we had and set up a Budapest themed Tank game.  we didn't really use any force organization or point system, just troops on the table and go time.

Plastic M4A3 (late) Sherman Platoon by Battlefront (UBX44)

-by Dirty Jon

The WWPD Crew was pretty excited when Battlefront sent us the new plastic M4A3 (late) Sherman Platoon for review.  This box set is part of the new move toward plastics, and gives you five tanks with two complete turrets for 75mm and 76mm Shermans.  There is also an option to make some of the 75mm turrets in to 105mm if you like.  You can also construct the Uparmored version of any of these tanks.  For my build, I am going to try to build these up like the pictures on the box.  Let's get to it!

The box has a very clear layout of the parts provided and color-codes all the parts you need for a particular build.  I also like that the sprues come with a ton of extra parts - it is clear that these are multi-use sprues, which should save on costs as well.

Bolt Action - Review: Frontline Gaming City Mat

Frontline Gaming made a big splash recently with there one of a kind battle mats.  For those of you not familiar with Frontline Gaming battle mats, they are essentially a giant mouse pad with a terrain graphic printed on it.  The original battle mat was a grassy field.  Nemesis Andy from Judson's NYC crew brought this bad boy down to Cold Wars this year and it was amazing to play on.  Back in Alaska my buddy, GI Joe scored a new front line mat at our local convention, AK Battle Brothers, in August.  GI Joe opted not to get the grassy mat and instead scored their new city mat.

Bolt Action - White Washing Tanks

In September, I mentioned that I intended to do some winter-themed tanks in an attempt at representing a white wash camouflage typically seen on the eastern front in the winter of 1942 to 1943. Bolt Action - Dutch reinforced platoon for the Pacific

Here we proudly present a guest post from a passionate Bolt Action player and forum member Chris, who fielded this Dutch army at the recent MOAB tournament in Sydney, Australia. This KNIL (Royal Netherlands East Indies army) platoon is not only quite possibly the only Dutch army being played in Bolt Action in Australia so far but is a truly unique hobby effort. No suprises that it won the coveted "Hano-swag" award at the tournament. An award that celebrates historical and 'cool' units over points efficient ones.
