Review: Warhammer Quest: Adventure Card Game

Let's take a look at Fantasy Flight's newest dungeon crawler card game - Warhammer Quest: the Adventure Card Game.

The game-play is similar to FFG's LotR card game, except there's no deck-building mechanic, and everything comes in one box (although I'm sure expansions are planned!)

It's a full cooperative fantasy dungeon crawler, with the "bad guys" controlled by AI rules. The game comes with two "rulebooks", similar to many of FFG's recent offerings.

One book contains a simple walk through of game play, and the second book is basically a dictionary of every term in the game.

The game comes with several pre-designed quests cards for you to complete, and also includes one free-form quest for endless replayability. One side of the quest cards will tell you how to set up the missions, which monsters to use, and which locations you'll explore, with a few random monsters and locations added for variety. In addition, it explains the victory conditions and what you get for succeeding if playing in a campaign setting.

Star Wars Armada - Video Review: Grand Moff Tarkin Has Been Sent to Suppress a Pirate Fleet

This is a game of Star Wars Armada we played, allowing other people to build our fleets for us. The Rebel fleet has a lot of flavor, as Judson intended it to represent a pirate fleet operating on the fringes.

There is a slight audio problem early in the video, but that issue has been resolved.

Bolt Action - Creating Greatcoat Japanese in 28mm (Part 1)

When we think of Japanese soldiers in WW2 we most often envision veteran jungle fighters in threadbare, tattered thin cotton uniforms charging out of the jungle in a last ditch effort to slow the unstoppable allied island hopping campaign as it drove unrelentingly towards the Japanese mainland. It is an iconic image that has been portrayed on television, in countless books and numerous films. Although this popular image was an accurate portrayal of some Japanese forces, it is not representative of a huge number of the Japanese soldiers that fought in WW2.  The War for Japan started in the early 1930's in Manchuria, throughout China and along the Russian border. Areas not known for their warm and temperate climate. Clearly the soldiers that fought there wore something that was a little more appropriate to their environment.  In the case of Japanese soldiers, many wore greatcoats over their standard uniform.  Wanting to make something that looked different on the table top, I sought to recreate soldiers wearing these uniforms and cold weather gear.

Bolt Action - Beginner's Guide to Making Forests

By Anthony "Anfernee" Mason

Recently I based up another batch of trees I'd purchased from an ebay store in China for the tabletop. I've probably based about 150 trees this way now and it's quite effective for the small amount of work. I've got enough to make a pretty solid forest table and still have a few more waiting in the wings to be done. So I thought I'd slap together a quick basic guide for those new to the hobby scene who want to add some great looking terrain to their tables.

Meeting Your Waterloo with “Blücher”

”It is an amazing thing when you bring together good friends, a beautifully detailed 8’ x 12’ terrain board, thousands of awesome looking 15mm miniatures, and a great set of wargame rules to tie them all together to play out one of the most iconic battles in history. That’s what happened when a group of Kentucky wargamers refought the battle, the full battle, of Waterloo in commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of the historic battle.

The Waterloo Battlefield in 8' x 12' glory!

The host for this event was Mike Pfanenstiel, perhaps the most prolific wargamer in the state of Kentucky. Mike had built an amazingly detailed and massive wargame board of the Waterloo battlefield and populated that board with over 4000 15mm Napoleonic Miniatures in 91 different units. It was a splendid visual spectacle, even before dice began to roll.  We are truly blessed to have a wargamer like Mike as part of our group!
The French are ready to commence the assault!

To relive this most famous of battles, we used “Blücher” by Sam Mustafa as our rules sets (See my previous rules review). Coincidently, Mike was the lead for the Kentucky playtest group for this rules sets. Mike Pike was is main sparring opponent for these playtest efforts with some lesser support from me in the earlier stages. It was great having a lot of playtester experience going into this game, but really the rules are so easy and straight forward that our two new “Blücher” players, Don Blevins and Charles McKellar had no issue jumping right in a full up Waterloo as their first experience with these rules.

Game Two was an Ozzel-led anti-fighter Imperial battlegroup against a Rieekan led MSU (Multiple Small Unit) Rebel build with no fighters! Keep an eye out for a fantastic maneuver by the Demolisher that altered the game dramatically around 3 minutes in.

Bolt Action - Using Masking Fluid when painting Camoflauge on Tanks

By Patch

I have been experimenting with the Masking Fluid by Vallejo recently and was rather pleased with the results. There are a number of methods and products you can use to help delineate between colours for camouflage when painting, such as using masking tape or a popular one is the easy to find blu tack, but for me I found the masking fluid easy to use with great results.

Down, But Not Out About Flames of War

By "Dirty" Jon Baber

As most of you have seen, there is certainly a drop in the amount of Flames of War coverage on the blog and in the podcast.  A few you have spoken to me or shot me a note asking me what's going on.  I figured that I would put some thoughts on the page, as it were, and see if I could figure out what is going on with my (lack of) interest in Flames of War.

Please note, I am speaking about my personal views only - you'll have to ask Steven, Luke and Eric what they think.

Too Much, Too Fast
Some of it is certainly that we played a LOT of it for quite a while.  Even more, I did some insane work painting and constructing FoW models - I painted and assembled 231 Tanks in 2013.  We went to a ton of tournaments and played a bunch around town.  If you listen to some of the old podcasts, you can hear about us playing a ton of games.

It seems to me that we went a little bonkers with Flames for a while.  As with anything, "those who burn twice as bright, burn half as long."

Twas The Night.... In a Galaxy Far Far Away

  By Mitch Reed

Twas the night before seven, when all 'round the table
Not a gamer was talking, no tall tale or fable
The space mat was laid across the table with care
In hope that my list would defeat all who dare

Knowing that a flight of four TIEs are soon dead
upgrades for my ships all danced in my head
Perhaps a Tie Phantom to sneak into their lap
But once de-cloaked that ship's easy to snap

So I settled on Imperial ships that really matter
Two interceptors, and an Advanced, the Rebels I will batter
With all the upgrades that make a 3-ship force a splash
Whatever X-Wing I encounter I will certainly bash

The table was arranged, my anticipation had grown
We placed obstacles and satellites to and then fro
Then my opponent’s forces started to appear
On the table in formation, I started to leer

B-Wings, E-wings, I started to get sick
This superb Rebel force will be very hard to lick
Against this mix my force is not so lame
Then an YT-1300 was placed; Millennium Falcon was the name

RRRR, Now on Biggs! Now Wedge!, Luke and Poe!
On, Rhymer! On Vader, On Jax and Echo!
To the edge of space, fight them all!
Now speed away! Speed away! Dash away all!"

Go right at them, into an asteroid don't fly,
Zoom with a straight 5, Turn on sharp 2 in the sky
Barrel roll, boost, in formation my ships flew
With proton torpedoes, ion cannons, the excitement grew

Closing in at range three, trying not to be aloof
Rolling my red die, to make an enemy go poof
They shot past me, with a Koiogran turning 'round,
Speeding right at me they came with a bound

Taking their shots at a range less than a foot,
With focus and target lock, perhaps I should scoot!
My green die rolling was keeping me on track
Though I should have ran; confidence I didn't lack

Maneuvering into position, unloading shots I was merry!
Rolling a lot of dice, the color of ripe cherry!
They could not evade and I landed a strong blow
One E-Wing destroyed! my lasers all a glow!

Then his B-Wing showed its deadly teeth,
Knocked out my 'ceptor! I shook like a leaf!
Two vs two, my shots had to be telling
I fired my missiles, my enemy was yelling

A badly damaged B-Wing I was smiling like an elf!
I shouldn’t get too cocky or ahead of myself!
But then before I could turn my head,
In came the Falcon, and brought with it dread.

Unloading on me, Han Solo made quick work,
Knocking out my Advantaced, I felt like a jerk.
With the damaged B-Wing in front of my nose,
I fired what I had left, Knocking it out I'd suppose

My odds were slim so I decided to run,
Knowing that this game was no longer fun.
Off I raced to the table edge and drove out of sight,
"May the force be with you on this wonderful night!”

My night with Team Yankee and the Battlefront Crew

By Mitch Reed
On Friday 11 December I decided to head up to Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie Maryland for the Team Yankee demo that was put on by the folks at Battlefront.  To be frank with the readers, I was not 100% sold if this new line was something I would be into, however I went in with an open mind and really wanted to see what Team Yankee is all about.

Slated to start at 6:30PM, the folks were a bit delayed by the traffic we have here in the Baltimore-Washington DC area.  The delay gave me the opportunity to speak with the 5-6 gamers who were waiting for the demo to begin.  I asked them if they were excited for this new line and why; it was obvious to me that if they were attending the demo they had some excitement for the game.  The "why" question got me some different answers: mostly those with the desire to see how the rules worked and the desire to use them with 6mm game scale. I have heard this before, and WWPD has covered “Fate of a Nation” games done in the 6mm.

John-Paul's Box of Goodies
The first to show from battle front was John-Paul Brisigotti the CEO of the Battlefront group.  John-Paul placed a box on the table to show the crowd which now reached about 15 the new models for the game.  The box had a bunch of painted M-1, and T-72 tanks and a few HIND helicopters. I was struck by the size of the tanks, they looked bigger than the King Tigers (they are 2” longer and 2” shorter than a KT in actuality) in my collection.  The helos looked huge, John-Paul stated that the helos for Team Yankee will be in 1/100th scale and aircraft like the A-10 and Frogfoot will be done in 1/144th scale like in Flames of War.

HIND at 1/100 Scale

Bolt Action - My Winter Russian Force Showcase

By Patch

I have been slowly putting together a Russian forced themed around the Battle of Moscow, for some time now between other projects to play in Bolt Action. This kicked off last Christmas when Northstar Military Figures put on a cracker of a deal on the new Winter Russian range from Crusader Miniatures alongside a T-34/76 from Rubicon. Along the way I collected other figures from Black Tree Design, Warlord Games and vehicles from Trenchworx, Warlord Games and Company B.

Blücher - A Napoleonic Rules Review

http://www.sammustafa.com/honour/store-selector/honour-store/
By Tom Burgess

Napoleonics…it’s where war gaming all stared for me. When I was eight years old I had a friend whose father was a Napoleonic wargamer. I was instantly hooked when I first saw the Napoleonics collection and a Waterloo table that he had. I then convinced my father to buy me some figures, which even he painted the first dozen of for me. From that point forward I had always had a great affinity for Napoleonic history and wargaming.
It’s been over four decades since then. In that time I've played well over dozen rule sets in the never ending quest for the perfect rule set and, along the way, often settling for popular rules sets just to get games in.  These normally fell short for me because I wanted to play full battles like Waterloo, in which scales and game detail made that goal unattainable for most rules sets. Some came close. I even tried to design my own set once, but none really got that balance of playability with the “Grand Tactical” perspective I wanted.  Then Sam Mustafa published Blücher.
Now I have to give a bit of disclaimer here. I was playtester for “Blücher” in its earlier days, but eventually dropped out of that effort as I kind of felt left behind by the vast number of revisions and different directions the earlier versions went in. It’s really tough keeping up with Sam in play testing! Nonetheless, I still bought the Blücher rules and the 100 Days Card Pack when they were released.  After playing a few smaller games to get familiarized with the rules, I really began to regret having dropped out of play testing. But when our gaming group refought the entire battle of Waterloo with five players in about eight hours, I knew for certain that it was big mistake to drop out of the process that resulted in this incredible rule set.

Bolt Action - 100 Games: Looking in the Rear-View Mirror

By Anthony "Anfernee" Mason

After these games, I realised they had pushed me over the 100 game mark, having now played 102 games of Bolt Action. (Yes I do keep all those stats, it stems from my love of mathematics haha). So today I plan to look back over those games and share with you some of the things I've learnt playing this great game and some of the things I still struggle with every time I play.

A Requiem for a Local Gaming Store

By Mitch Reed

In the past I have written about a great group of gamers who meet on Fridays at the Game Parlor in Chantilly VA who play some of the best history based Flames of War games I have seen.  Friday 20 November was no different and I was greeted with a friendly ‘hello” as I walked in the door.

The salutation came from Cindy Weigand, who may not have remembered my name all the time, but remembered me by site and always offered a friendly welcome to the store.

Billed as the "The store with every type of game,” the Game Parlor was a fixture in the Northern Virginia community for the last 25 years.  Run by Cindy and Rob Weigand, the store which once had two locations was a place where local gamers could gather and play and of course shop for many different types of games, paints, comics, or cards.

Nebulon-B Support – Redemption (59pts)
Nebulon-B Support – (51pts)
4 x A-Wings – (44pts)

Gladiator – Demolisher – ACM – Engine Tech – (81pts)
Gladiator – ACM – (63pts)

In Act I, we’ve got some news from across the World of Wargaming, and have a look at some promising kickstarter campaigns.

In Act II, we talk about out TCOW games, Rust in the City’s Firestorm Caen campaign, and surviving the TNT wasteland.

In Act III, we get up to our usual shenannegans talking about the return of Games Workshop’s specialist games and discuss the fickle nature of being rather too impatient for new games to arrive on our tables.
