Bolt Action - Creative Composition for Miniatures

By John Brader

The saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Well, if that’s true, then a well composed miniature can convey a whole story. Composition, or the way the elements of a piece relate to one-another, can often take a mediocre painted miniature and make it grand or ruin the effect of a stellar painting project. The techniques demonstrated here are subtle but intended to give you ideas about how to use “story” and composition to take your figures to the next level.

BEL Ep. 21:

It’s 2016 and we’re back! We had a busy holiday with lots of relaxin’ and gamin’ but now we’re back in the BEL saddle getting ready for our exciting Flames Of War Pacific coverage!

In Act I, we talk about n00b news from over the holidays, look at some upcoming kickstarters, and more..

In Act II, we cover what we’ve been up to at club and our seasonal garage gaming, before leaking a bit of info about #FoWPacific and what we’ve got lined up on our various social media channels.

In Act III, we look at punitive actions in organized play, and then finish up by answering a great question about how to get into games, like Flames Of War.

Star Wars Armada - Ship Review: The CR90 Corvette

By Steven McLauchlan

Now that Wave 2 has really made Armada feel like a complete game, I thought it would be fun to write up some articles taking a closer look at the ships and their roles. I'm going to start with what is probably my favorite ship in all of Star Wars: The CR90 Corvette.

Like all current ships in Armada, the CR90 comes in two distinct flavors: The A and B Variant. Both versions sport 4 hull, 1 blue anti-squadron die, 1 Command, 1 squadron, 2 engineering and a maximum speed of 4 with a very generous allocation of "clicks" making the ship both fast and maneuverable. The shields are 2 on the front and sides and 1 on the rear, which when combined with the hull of 4 makes for a ship that can't take a substantial beating. The CR90 is a rapier, not a broadsword- intended to outmaneuver your opponent and use speed and maneuver as its defense. Speaking of defense, it possesses 2 evade tokens and 1 redirect.

Bolt Action - Review: King Tiger (Porsche Turret) from Warlord games

By Garratt

Hey guys. Garratt from the Baconburgers here with a huge slice of mild Monterey Jack. I'm reviewing Warlord Game's King Tiger (Porsche Turret). This big beast is sure to be a centerpiece of any German force, it commands your attention due to it's sheer bulk alone, as it crosses the tabletop crushing all laid out before it. At least that is what you hope it does when you sink 555+ points into this awesome bruiser.

MERCS: Recon - First Look

by Dirty Jon

Mercs: Recon is Megacon Games latest Kickstarter shipping out to supporters.  You all may know them as the guys behind Myth.  I just got in my base games, with all the stretch goals to come later.  In this article, I will take a look at the contents and talk a little about the game.  This is NOT a full review, as I have not played the game - this is just a quick look with first impressions.

So, the game is all about competing entities using special forces teams to accomplish certain objectives in a concise mission.  The players take on different roles on the mission - Leader, Heavy Weapons, etc.  - to cooperatively accomplish the objective(s).  Each of the teams has a different flavor and abilities, with appropriate miniatures provided.

The game takes place on a floor in an office building, with the players inserted among the regular employees and security forces.  The team must approach the mission carefully, as killing innocent employees will raise the threat level, resulting in a more dangerous response by the security forces.

Bolt Action - Old Man Morin's Commonwealth Indian Army Showcase

By: Old Man Morin

It is Australia Day week Down Under and that, for countless war-gamers, means one thing. The pilgrimage to Canberra and Cancon! While just about everyone else in the Bolt Action Alliance crew is off playing for fun and glory in this year's, 42-player event, I am holding down the fort back in Melbourne town. As this was the army that won last year's event, I thought it would be appropriate to pull it out for a few army showcase pictures.

The infantry in the army was painted by The LRDG's own phenomenally talented Warlord Tobu many moons ago. The models themselves are a combination of the Artisan Designs Indian range and Warlord Games miniatures (using their optional Sikh heads sprue). The Gurkha Squad is from the Assault Group's Britain in the East Range. Though my infantry come from a fairly diverse range of companies, the models really come together as one coherent force once painted and based. I painted the vehicle and artillery models for this army and as the pictures appear I will mention which model ranges they were pillaged from to find the right match for this project.

Bolt Action - Creating Greatcoat Japanese: Part 3 - Writing An Army List

By Old Man Morin

Howdy gang! As promised I am back with the third and final installment of my greatcoat Japanese articles. If you are interested in the modelling side of this project you can find the Part 1 and Part 2 by clicking the links.

Now for those just tuning in, I set out on this project to create a Bolt Action army that would be unique both in composition and in appearance, while being historically flavoured. I wanted to avoid the iconic images of masses of inexperienced, ragged IJA soldiers pouring out of the jungles in a banzai charge to repel the Allied advance towards the Japanese homeland at the end of the war. Instead, I decided to look at Japanese soldiers prior to the beginning of WW2 as they invaded and fought Chinese forces on the Asian mainland. A fight that soon became part of the greater world wide conflict. Northern China (or even other parts of China in winter) is not a warm place. Thin cotton fatigues would not do for soldiers fighting in these cooler climates (as the Germans discovered when they invaded Russia). I chose to focus on a force made up of warmly dressed Japanese soldiers who used the weapons and gear available in the later half of the 1930's. Though I have loosely based my army around the urban fighting that occurred in Shanghai, I have taken some small liberties as the major conflict in and around Shanghai was not fought through the worst of the winter months.

Bolt Action - Review: Warlord Games Battlefied Objectives - Fuel Dump Supply

Whilst we often look to Warlord Games for our toy soldiers and tanks I was given the opportunity recently to paint up and review some of their terrain. They have packaged up some of their scatter resin and metal terrain with larger pieces to create a Battlefield Objectives range, the one I have is the Fuel Supply but also available is the Radar Assault and Bunker Assault.

Bolt Action - Afrika Korp platoon

By Bryan

Hey guys, welcome to North Africa! I'll be taking you through my latest platoon for Bolt Action. Rommel's much vaunted veterans, the Afrika Korp. What you see is the initial 1000pts or so, a kind of minimum standard size for games. I began painting this army in November with the intention of taking it to Australia's largest Bolt Action event, Cancon, in late January 2016. I've managed to avoid painting in the hotel room the night before the event so I am happy. This was mainly due to my method of painting the infantry.

Bolt Action - Hungarian Paratroopers. Who?

By Anthony "Anfernee" Mason

If you've listened to any of the Ghost Army Podcast episodes where I have managed to talk about the Royal Hungarian Army, you may have heard me wax about the Hungarian Paratroopers. When researching my list, I began to find small snippets of information on this elusive unit and they soon became one of my favourite units in the Hungarian army. Having just finished painting up a squad, I decided to delve into their history and how I plan to use them in my games of Bolt Action.

Bolt Action - Why Consider Heavy Tanks

By: Old Man Morin

We often hear people talk about how Bolt Action is an infantry focused, squad/platoon based game. In that way it is the opposite of games like Flames of War, where later war, bigger tanks with larger guns usually equates to better performance. In BA, smaller early war tanks festooned with piles of machine guns tend to be great because they beat up the games primary units, infantry. Because these tanks tend to be light on armour, many players tend to skimp on anti-tank assets as they are often unnecessary. These smaller vehicles also tend to be pretty cheap, points wise, compared to their larger cousins making them even more attractive when players build their forces. This trend tends to indicate that bigger vehicles are a big no-no. I would tend to disagree.

Review: Mice and Mystics

By Scott Simoneau

Mice and Mystics is a dungeon crawler board game by Plaid Hat Games that many people have referred to as an RPG in a box. The story behind the game is that the adventuring party had a spell cast on them that transforming them all into tiny mice in order to escape from a prison, and now you're undertaking missions such as crawling through the sewers, avoiding the cleaner's broom sweeps, and running away from the house cat, all while fighting other tiny rats wielding swords and shields. Crazy, huh?

Bolt Action - Snow Basing

Today we have an article by an old friend of the cast, John Brader. Please enjoy.

The recent influx of figures in winter gear inspired me to take a closer look at creating realistic winter bases that could be done with only a few products and relatively quickly.  Personally, I’ve applied these techniques to a winter Soviet army with good results.

Bolt Action - Creating Greatcoat Japanese in 28mm (Part 2)

By: Old Man Morin

Last week, I wrote an article detailing how to create IJA (Imperial Japanese Army) infantry models wearing greatcoats and cold weather gear. Although most people don't usually think of Japanese forces wearing this kind of gear, they did so during their campaigns in China, Manchuria and Alaska. Soldiers wore mittens, gloves, coats, uniforms, hats and helmets to protect themselves from the elements.

I wanted to create an army that looked original and was thematically linked to an era of a specific conflict. In this case, Japanese forces during the 1930s in China.

Bolt Action - Review: Debris of War Stowage Set

By Tristan

When I started off in the hobby my initial focus was terrain building. I found an enormous sense of achievement from building interesting and exciting pieces, and pretty soon I found myself looking for a viable source of well caste, detailed stowage and terrain supplements.

After searching about online, I came across Debris of War. DoW sell a fine selection of resin caste stowage that are perfectly scaled for 28mm vehicles and terrain. I purchased the 30 different items of stowage set and waited patiently. In no time at all, I received a package from the UK and I was ready to rock!

Review: Snoopy vs the Red Baron; Wings of Glory WW1

By Mitch Reed

While space themed dog-fighting games are all the rage right now, players who want a historical feel are not left out in the cold.  “Wings of Glory WW1” by ARES Games has been out since 2004 when it was called ‘Wings of War” and now has different rule-sets that cover both the Great War and the Second World War. I have been playing the WW1 (the official name, it should be Great War) version for over a year now and I only regret I do not play it enough.

One thing I wanted to address is the plethora of pre-painted miniatures games that are very popular right now.  Star Wars X-Wing/Armada, Wings of Glory (WW1 & WW2), and Star Trek, are just a few of the games that bill themselves as miniature games and also supplies the player with finished forces in which to play the game.  From a marketing standpoint one can see what a great idea this is since it gives a player the ability to play the game right out of the box
without having to paint and base their forces.

I think this and the tight rules (more on this later) gives these games an edge over games in which you have to paint tons of figures before you can play.

Playing mat; optional but a nice touch.  They have a few different types

Star Wars Armada - Steve's Imperial Fleet

Just another quick post to document my Imperial fleet for Star Wars Armada. Naturally, this fleet is far less colorful, and only one capital ship has seen any appreciable paint added! I have, however, added windows to all of the capital ships, which only show up so well in these pictures.

The former flagship of the fleet- an againg Victory Star Destroyer, and one of the last capital ships to be granted permission to paint any flashing.

Bolt Action - Review: Laser Touch Strike Case

By Tristan

Recently I received the Strike carry-case from Laser Touch. For far too long I've transported my figures around in cardboard boxes and other dubious forms of "protection." In the last 12 months I've lost numerous aerials, gun barrels and don't even get me started on the number of turret mounted MMGs & HMGs, I've had to glue back on.

Late War Fighting Withdrawal - Germans vs. USSR

by "Dirty" Jon

Tarzan and I decided to play a Late War game of Flames of War before recording the podcast.  We wanted to do something weird, so we jacked up the points and both picked lists that are not great. I wanted to get the old Panzer IV/70s on the board - which I love.

I went with an entire company of CT PzIV/70s, some Nebs, Ostwinds, a little Infantry, a CV King Tiger and Rudel.

Eric made up a hero IS-2 list and we went at it. His list had three platoons of two IS-2s with the FA 11 upgrade.  He also had a unit of T-34/85s, some arty, two Assault Guns (I think ISU...something) and air.

We rolled up a random mission and got Fighting Withdrawal.  I won the game roll (by rolling low) and got to Defend - yay!

Zee Germans take the lower half of this board.
