WWPD's own Chris Miller came to my house for the weekend along with his wife Sarah to hang out. We got a Flames of War game in- surprisingly it was Chris' FIRST game! As with Joe's battle previously, I decided a game with me defending would allow me to focus on teaching rather than playing.

DEPLOYMENT AND TURN ONE

Objectives: On the British side to the left of the small central hill, and just "north east" of that in the small area of rough terrain. British have 6 pounders, and 2 motor platoons on board with HMGs in ambush. Chris has (from North to South) 8-rads, panzergrenadiers, marders, panzergrenadiers and nebelwerfers, panzergrenadiers & Panzers.

Panzers and infantry support.

Marders and Panzergrenadiers

And again

The German cmmander's view

A nebelwerfer barrage marks the launch of the operation!

Panzers and infantry advance.

Marders take up a concealed position behind a wall.

HMGs ambush far forward of the main line.

My reserve rolls are hot! Grants arrive on turn one.

Panzergrenadiers in the town take substantial losses.

As well as the platoon in the open!

And a Grant scores a lucky long range shot, knocking out a Panzer IV!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

BRITISH
none

GERMANS
South Panzergrenadiers: 3 MG stands
Central Panzergrenadiers: 3 MG stands
Panzers: 1 Panzer IV F1

TURN TWO

The return fire on the HMGs is brutal! Tanks, and Marders open up. The Panzer IV F2 enters into a gun duel with the Grants in the distance, but misses his mark.

The HMGs are totally gutted! oops!

A nebelwerfer barrage again strikes, despite my vets keeping their heads in the foxholes! Light casualties are suffered by both the AT guns and the Motor platoon.

The HMGs are eliminated!

Humber IIs arrive from reserve!

As do the Stuarts! Seriously, my reserve dice were hot! Stuarts move at the double to get the situation from HQ.

Semi-indirect fire from the Grants bails the Panzer IV F2.

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

BRITISH
HMG Platoon: DESTROYED
Northern Motor Platoon: 1 AT Rifle
6 Pounders: 1 Gun

GERMANS
South Panzergrenadiers: 3 MG stands
Central Panzergrenadiers: 3 MG stands
Panzers: 1 Panzer IV F1

TURN THREE

"Here they come lads!"

"Enemy infantry! Left side!"

The German advance in the north

The last reserve platoon arrives. The Scouts take up position where the Stuarts were previously!

Humbers move up ready to support the defense of the well.

Stuarts race forward, ready to strike! What can I say, I was feeling bloodthirsty!

A 6 pounder opens up, and cracks open 1 IV F1 and 1 Panzer III N, and bails the other Panzer IV! These men are awarded the VC. The Panzer pass motivation and stay in.

The Stuarts assault! The Panzergrenadiers think better of the situation and pull back.

The Stuarts then breakthrough assault the platoon in the city! The only Panzer who can assist in defensive fire is bailed by 6 pounder shells! The German infantry is hit hard and promptly quits the field.

The Stuarts can't really avoid the Marders, so I know it's nearly hopeless, but they consolidate forward anyway.

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

BRITISH
HMG Platoon: DESTROYED
Northern Motor Platoon: 1 AT Rifle
6 Pounders: 1 Gun

GERMANS
South Panzergrenadiers: DESTROYED
Central Panzergrenadiers: 4 MG stands
Panzers: 2 Panzer IV F1, 1 Panzer III N

TURN FOUR

Nebelwerfers pin the defenders in preparation of the assault!

"Attack!"

The Marders slowly swing their guns left. Radio contact with the Stuarts is lost.

The assault is launched! A 6 pounder round previously knocked out one of the 8-rads.

Despite renowned resilience, the British give up the well and fall back!

Marders are given the order to advance. Two of them get hung up crashing through the wall.

The last IV F1 is knocked out by Semi Indirect fire from the Grants! The Panzer IV F2 sticks around.

The Grants have been very lucky in their gun duel with the Panzers. A grand total of 3 "6"s were rolled for saves, bouncing the Panzer IV's shot!

The Armored Cars hook around and assault the attacking Germans!

Despite finishing off one platoon, the Company Commander pulled in a second platoon who counter assaults and annhilates the armored cars!

The Motor infantry then mop up. The German company commander is knocked out!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

BRITISH
HMG Platoon: DESTROYED
Stuarts: DESTROYED
Armored Cars: DESTROYED
Northern Motor Platoon: 1 AT Rifle, 3 MG Teams
6 Pounders: 1 Gun

GERMANS
South Panzergrenadiers: DESTROYED
North Panzergrenadiers: DESTROYED
Central Panzergrenadiers: DESTROYED
Panzers: 3 Panzer IV F1, 1 Panzer III N

TURN FIVE

Nebelwerfers slam into the hill, knocking out the hero 6 pounder crew! Turns out their award was posthumous.

The marders and remaining 8-rad spray the British with MG fire, wiping them and the company commander out! after an assault that very nearly went south! (1 Marder was destroyed by an AT rifle defensive shot, and 2 bogged in the rough!)

But finally, after pumping shell after shell, the Grants pop open the Panzer IV F2, putting the Germans below half with no company commander. a VERY close battle that was 1 roll away from swinging in favor of Chris. Beginner's luck I say!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
