Bolt Action - The Morining After: Old Man Morin Responds...

By: Old Man Morin

The last 24 hour hours have been interesting in the boltaction.net bunker. In case you missed it, Commodore Judson posted his thoughts about the direction of Bolt Action in his explaining why boltaction.net was merging with WWPD. Since then, let’s just say… The internet has been hot with feedback, questions and criticism.

I am here to set the record straight and clarify some serious misconceptions that some people have had regarding the post and… well…. Us.

To begin with, it is important to acknowledge that the staff at boltaction.net are unpaid fans of the game and there are a lot of us. Each us of have our own thoughts and opinions regarding life, love and Bolt Action. While I may not entirely agree with all of Jud’s points, I can definitely see where he is coming from.

Transition Time for Betty, the Boys and BoltAction.Net

By Judson

It is a time of transition at BoltAction.Net.

That doesn't mean we're throwing an improvised anti-tank charge into your tracks from inches away, though! What it means, in simplest terms, is that articles relating to Bolt Action or 28mm Second World War gaming will appear on www.wwpd.net, and the web address www.boltaction.net will redirect readers to wwpd.net. Read below for more details, and a short thank you.

Star Wars Armada - Tournament Report

By Steven MacLauchlan

On August 23rd, I had the pleasure of attending a small Star Wars Armada tournament at Battlegrounds in Richmond, VA. The tournament wasn't hugely attended, but 5 players showed up to pew pew, and that's good enough for me!

I decided to go with a group of three Assault Frigate Mk II Bs. To be honest, I had no idea if the fleet would perform. I have never used Garm, but have seen him used to good effect. I also wasn't sure 3 Assault Frigates would be versatile enough, but I love the ship so I figured I'd give it a go.

For my objectives, I chose Opening SalvoIntel Sweep, and Fire Lanes.

Heretical Bananas: Horus Heresy-Era Imperial Fists

By Tom de Mayo

Since moving away from Richmond, I'm in an area with lots of Warhammer 40k, but not much Flames of War. So I've been painting a lot of 28mm Warhammer 40k. One of my latest projects has been a Horus Heresy army.

Of the existing legions, I wanted a loyalist force. After a few test models and a lot of dithering, I settled on the Imperial Fists. I've been doing them on the cheap, using the basic GW plastics mixed in with only a little bit of semi-precious Forgeworld resin. My forces are a mix of loyalist and chaos elements, with a bit of conversion, and some plasticard.

Yellow is a pain in the ass to paint. It took me a long time to come up with a technique I like. I have settled spraying them black. Then I dry brush a base coat of GW Steel Legion drab. I then layer a 50/50 mix of Steel Legion Drab and Averland Sunset, followed by pure Averland Sunset, and finally 30/30/30 Averland Sunset, Yriel Yellow and white, for a nice creamy color. I then wash the armor with a mix of Vallejo Brown ink, Vallejo Black ink and water.

Kings Of War: Old Man Morin's Orc Amy: Part 3 (Goblins And Using Allies In KoW)

By Old Man Morin

Welcome back gang,

In the last couple of articles in this series I have detailed how I am transferring one of my favorite and craziest hobby projects over from Warhammer Fantasy Battle to Mantic's newest edition of Kings Of War.  Now this project started out as an Orc and Goblin army but in KoW these races have been split up into two distinctly different army lists, thank fully KoW has rules for allies.

Now version 2 of KoW is not commercially available (at the time of this writing) (ed note: you can find the core rules for V2 here and many starter army lists here) but copies are starting to trickle out to Kickstarter supporters and it appears that allies will be in the book. As orcs and goblins are both evil races and are both green skinned races, I don't think it will be a massive leap fluff wise to include units from one army into the other.

The goblin horde, early in the process

Star Wars X-Wing - Battle Report: First Scum game! YV-666 & 2x Khiraxz vs K, A, and X-Wings.

Got in my first game with Scum, and it was all new ships! I must admit, I thought the YV-666 looked a bit silly when I first saw it, but once I opened the box I fell in love with that ugly demon-beast. It's 0-speed maneuver and wide fire arcs were interesting! I really liked the Khiraxz fighter- felt like a Scum X-Wing. Andrew ran the Rebs.

Review: Battlefront Paints

By Dirty Jon Baber

Battlefront recently sent us some of their new paints for review. With all of the convention activity going on, I am just now getting around to taking a look at them. I had a chance to use the German spray paint and the German armor paint set. The spray can retails for $12 USD.

In looking at the text on the can, it is referred to as 'primer', so I just sprayed it on the models with no undercoat. I was quite happy with the paint, as it went on smooth and only needed two coats to get a nice, deep color. When shaking the can, I was thinking that the paint seemed 'thin', but the coverage was just fine.

The five paint pots are $15 USD. In the paint set, you get four pots with 12ml each, and one of Panther Yellow with 20ml. For a comparison, the old Vallejo pots are 17ml each. This new system assumes that everyone will purchase the Quartermasters Paint Set, which goes for $30 USD for ten different paints - purchasing just the German Armour Paint Set will NOT get you enough paints to fully paint your tanks.

I found the paint to be a little weird from a consistency standpoint. The only word I can use to describe it is 'gel'. The paint has a very different texture from the Vallejo that I am accustomed to. The coverage was thin, and I did not find it as good as the old stuff - it worked with two coats, but I was not super-excited about it.

Bolt Action - Review: Copplestone Castings Chinese Infantry and Cavalry

Hey Gang,

Many of you following the boltaction.net Facebook page have seen my WIP progress shots over the last week, as I prepare my new WW2 Chinese forces for painting. Enough people have asked where I got the models that I thought I would share the treasure that is Copplestone Castings's Chinese range.

As a child, I grew up hopping around Asia with my parents. While we spent most of our time in Japan, we did spend a considerable period of time in China as well. In fact, my father and I spent an interesting 6 weeks in China under martial law in 1987 after the Tianamen Square incident and subsequent crackdown (but that is another story). As a result, although Japan has always been my true love, China has always fascinated me. The fact that Japan invaded China in the early 1930's and that this conflict eventually spilled over into WW2 means that Chinese forces should indeed be included in the "Bolt Action Universe." With the "Empires in Flames" pacific theatre book next in line in the BA line up, I thought it was an excellent opportunity to get in early (for a change) and have an army ready as a new army list comes out.

Now Copplestone Castings is a company that I had heard about over the years as a war gamer. And though I had heard good things, I had never played a game in the time period of their models... unit now. Their Back Of Beyond range includes a fantastic 1930's era Chinese army that fit my purposes exactly. In a moment of weakness I decided it was time to take a gamble.

Gamble you may ask? Warlord has not released their Chinese army list yet so I don't know if the Chinese National Rules are any good (given that their PDF special rules are... limiting). I also don't know what units will be good in the new book. Sooo, I got what looked good and what I thought sounded cool background wise. Basically I picked up 40 riflemen and one of just about everything else.

Hello, sports fans! Oh, you're not? Well, could I interest you in a low-fantasy skirmish game that doubles as a sports miniatures game? Yes? Excellent. Welcome to Guild Ball, from Steamforged Games.

Guild Ball is a Medieval Football skirmish game, in which teams of players representing various mercantile guilds battle it out on the pitch to settle differences between their employers and generally keep fractious city-states from going to war with one another.

Dust up Ridge! Panzer Grenadiers Vs US Armored Rifles

 By Eric Lauterbach

Bob Everson and I decided to brush up on our Mid-war Flames of War in preparation for the Guns of August Tournament we would be running. The points would be 1650 and the table would be an Italy or Sicily style. Bob loves the US Armored Rifles -- they have everything and it is a go to army for him.

His list was Shermans, M10s, 2 Armored Rifle platoons, Priests and some Recon. I, on the other hand, had some brand new Panzer IIIs that had never been used. So I made a Panzer Grenadiers list from Eastfrontlist to fit them in. It included 2 PzGren platoons in trucks, 2 Pak 50, Tiger, Panzer IIIs with two "J" and two "G", Nebs, and Aufklarungs in tracks. The mission would be dust up. I tried something different with the terrain mixing my desert stuff with green to make a dry Mediterranean look.

The Ridge.

REVIEW: The Carentan Expansion for Heroes of Normandie

By Sean "Throckmorton" Sarah

In a spurt of new releases over the next few months Devil Pig, the makers of the Origins Award Winning game Heroes of Normandie are pumping out a number of products for their flagship game line. In my last article I took a look at the new Sainte-Mere-Eglise expansion which covered night fighting and paradrops.

Today's foray into Heroes land gives us a look at the damnably bloody battle for Carentan where the 101st Airborne squared off against Oberstleutnant Freidrich August Freiherr von der Heydte's 6th Fallschirmjagers (I really just wanted to use his full name, because it's pretty epic as names go) in a struggle for one of the key crossroads leading out of Normandy.

Where Sainte-Mere-Eglise gave us a ton of American Airborne units, Carentan focuses almost entirely on the Fallschirmjagers giving the German players a deadly new option in their defense of the bocage country.

Bolt Action - Grudge Matches

Recently I made the long trip to chilly Canberra from an equally chilly Melbourne, to take part in an incredible experience: Wintercon.  Wintercon was my first interstate tournament and it was with a sense of excitement that I made the trip as I knew I was going to be throwing dice with a new friend, rival and now nemesis.  I had grudged one of most well known names in our community: Patch.  Now the result of our match was completely inconsequential.  Win, loss or draw, I knew I'd walk away with a smile on my face because I knew full well that there would be laughter, maybe some tears and afterward our friendship would be stronger for having met one another on the field of battle.

Grudge matches are an excellent opportunity for any player, no matter their level of experience, to be able to pick out an opponent and throw dice.  I've had a few grudge matches over my short time in BA and every time they've ended with a smile, a handshake and generally a good laugh. Because we have such a small community, it's common that we see one another frequently during our local events.  In fact, after the last 3 Melbourne based events, I can count on seeing familiar faces everytime a new event comes along.  So when we hit the road and travel somewhere new, it's great to find new and unfamiliar faces to roll against.

Kings Of War: Old Man Morin's Orc Amy: Part 2 (The Thinking Behind The Madness)

Bolt Action - Wintercon 2015 part 1: The French

Ever heard of a French force winning a Bolt Action event? It's not often you'll see the French up there, rubbing shoulders with the major powers like the US and Soviets. But here in Australia we recently had a two day double event, Wintercon 2015. Day 1 was 'Early War' themed, which allowed the French to really shine, eventually taking out the top spot with 'best minor power' and 'best general'. It wasn't an easy victory though...game one I faced off against the Blitzkrieg master himself, Patch, with his lovely Germans.  To throw in front of the advancing Germans I took the disposable heroes of the French Foreign Legion.

Patton's Dream, Independence Day Tank Fest

By Mitch Reed, With Jay Mischo
Photos By Greg Cilia

A while back I wrote an article about playing historical based scenarios with a gaming group here in Northern Virginia.  While work has kept me away from playing on Friday afternoons, I was able to take advantage of the day off prior to July 4th and join these guys for yet another great game.

In my absence I did read the many emails prior to each weeks game; battlefields such as the snowy steppes of Russia to the arid desert of North Africa were some of the many scenarios that were recreated for the group that assembles at the Game Parlor in Chantilly VA at noon every Friday.  While I am sorry I missed these great games, the holiday weekend had a great topic ready for me to play; a "what-if" scenario between the victorious Allies vs. the Soviets in the months following the end of the war in Europe.

The players were instructed to bring 2000 points from any late war American, British, or Soviet briefing. With the Berlin book not yet out, the Soviet forces were taken from Desperate Measures and Red Bear, while the Remagen and Nachtjager books made up the bulk of the allied lists.  The allied players were allowed to use a limited number of German units that would represent the Germans who would carry on the fight with the Soviets after the surrender of Germany.

Having picked up way to many Comet's over the last few months, my list was the Armoured Squadron from Nachtjager.

Kings Of War: Old Man Morin's Orc Amy: Part 1 (Sculpting An Army From Next To Nothing)

Hey Gang,

With the destruction of the Warhammer Fantasy World (and the Warhammer Fantasy Game for that matter), the fate of my most ambitious hobby project ever looked grim.  I had spent literally over 12 months sculpting, converting and mostly painting, a one of a kind, Orc and Goblin army for Warhammer Fantasy Battle.

I have always been a massive fan of the Chaos Dwarf army and its fluff and history.  Chaos Dwarves were infamous slavers who most commonly enslaved green skinned races for their own maligned purposes.  A Chaos Dwarf army would be supplemented by hobgoblin, orc and black orc troops.  The slave masters would throw their conscripted troops into their enemies without care as their magic and guns tore enemy troops and their slaves to pieces.

This got me thinking... What would happen if, Sparticus style, the slaves revolted and broke free?
