The LRDG II Podcast: Episode 10

The LRDG II Podcast: Episode 10
Like the Kardashians, Old Man Morin appears to have survived the calamities of 2016, which means only one thing... More LRDG II content in the new year! Brad is back with our tenth episode along with two sets of guests to kick off another season of podcasting madness.

In segment one, Sam from The Down Order Podcast helps Brad shake off the cobwebs of not having cast for a while and the guys talk the state of Bolt Action now that version two has been out for a while now. They also generally discuss the "new" Armies of Germany book and discuss a few units not discussed in other places.

It is that time of year again, the run up to Cancon, Australia's largest Bolt Action event. Though Brad is not attending, he talks with hobby god's Steven Drury and Andrew Brownrigg about how they are preparing for this huge event. They also discuss K'47 in the world post BA V2 and discuss how they are preparing their forces for the Cancon Konflikt'47 event.

Please check out the episode and let us know what you think, for good or for worse, on The LRDG Podcast Facebook page. We do love and appreciate the feedback!

Konflikt '47 - Jump Around: A Look At Mobile Infantry In K'47

Veterans of Bolt Action will tell you that there is only one real way of getting across a board quickly. A truck. Halftracks and other armoured vehicles are sadly often too expensive; points wise, for what they do. While new rules may change this dynamic in BA Version 2, we already have a hot, new mobile unit type in Konflikt ’47. Jump infantry.

I, Old Man Morin, am notorious for playing fast, “hitty” armies. I like deciding where and when to take the fight to my opponent. I like to exploit weak spots in their line. I like jumping on objectives early and holding them or moving up to claim them in the last turns of the game, after I have wiped my opponent’s forces away. In short: I feel the need, the need for speed. In a game where objectives are so important in so many missions, I think mobility is a big deal. That in mind, I was more than a little excited to find flying troopers as a new unit type in K’47.

Bolt Action/Konflikt '47 - Embracing Change... Or... Why Change Is Not A Bad Thing

Last night I sat down with a mate to play another game of Konflikt ’47. I have been playing semi-regularly since the game’s release and despite this, my opponent and I found ourselves going back to the rules many times as we unpacked and worked our way through situations that arose over the course of the game. When reflecting back we discovered that we had been playing draws, in the combat resolution phase, incorrectly. This is an error that significantly changed our understanding of how the assault phase works. As we face the end of the original Bolt Action rule set, I think it is important to remember a few key things when looking at a new edition of a loved game system.

Konflikt '47 - Converting Automated Carriers

Friend of the LRDG cast, Stu Williams, has been working on an original, incredible looking Konflikt '47 British army built around a number of units of Automatons and Automated Carriers. You might have found his "work in progress" shots on the Konflikt '47 Facebook page. We were lucky enough to catch up with Stu and he has outlined how he went about making his original automated carriers. Enjoy.

Afternoon all, Old Man Morin at the LRDG Podcast and WWPD asked me to throw together a quick "how to" article describing how to scratch build my versions of the Automated Carriers. So grab a brew and I’ll explain my process to you.

Konflikt '47 - Things That Go Bump In The Night: A Look At "Supernatural" Units In The German Army List

Things That Go Bump In The Night

The idea that classic monster archetypes freely roam the battlefield is a common feature of the “Weird War Two” genre. Given the horrific nature of total war and the long-speculated fascination that high ranking Nazi’s had with the occult, it is not hard to see why. As a “Weird War” game, Konflikt ’47 does not disappoint. The beasties of our childhood stalk from our imaginations into the Bolt Action universe. In K'47, the existence of these creatures is explained as a result of scientific exploration and experimentation gone mad. That does not change the fact that we, for the first time, can add werewolves, vampires and zombies to our BA armies. It is a great time to play the game!

Of the four major nationalities covered in the Konflikt book, only two nations utilise these genetically modified fiends. Today I will be investigating and discussing the three new “supernatural” creatures introduced in the K’47 German army list.

As we begin, I think it is again important to say that the authors of Konflikt ’47 are quick to point out that these “super soldiers” are not supernatural at all. In the story of the K’47 universe, after the atomic bombing of Dresden in 1944, the Germans discover and partially translate messages transmitted from a “rift” created by the dropping of the bomb. These messages are interpreted by scientists looking for technology to give their forces a needed edge on the battlefield. German leadership encouraged these scientists and researchers to throw caution to the wind in their pursuit of new “wonder weapons” that could be used against Allied troops. One of these new, secret scientific discoveries was in the area of genetic manipulation of human beings leading to the creation of our three new units types: the Totenkorps, the Schreckwulfen and the Nachtjager.

Konflikt '47 - An Examination Of New Weapons That K'47 Brings To The Battlefield

One of the most exciting parts of devouring new game expansions for me has always been diving into new weapon systems or equipment that change the rules of the game. These new items broaden the horizons of possibilities in the game, for better or worse, and always refresh the viability of older units and options as new combinations of gear come into existence.

While Konflikt ’47 is not technically an expansion to Bolt Action perse, it kind of is. Because it is built on the version one rule set of BA and because units of BA immediately slot comfortably into the K’47 game and universe, it is hard not to consider new weaponry within its pages as a expansion on how armies in the game play. Today, I will be looking at the three new tank mounted weapon systems that K’47 introduces to game.

Konflikt '47 - Heavy Infantry And What It Brings To The Table

Over the last couple of weeks I have been able to get in some games of the new Bolt Action rule set, Konflikt ’47. While the game is heavily based on the standard BA rules, it introduces several game-changing innovations like reactions and an improved assault system. I have been pondering the implications of these changes to how the game plays and do they subtly but significantly change how infantry units operate and interact in the game. The game also introduces several new types of units to the tabletop. One of these new unit categories uses these new infantry rules to maximum effect. Today I would like to talk about Heavy Infantry.

All four of the “Big Four” nations represented in the K’47 rulebook have access to heavy infantry, though every nation’s armoured infantry are noticeably different. Each has their own personality, cost and weapon options. Before we get into the differences, we should probably talk about what they have in common. Heavy infantry are assumed to be wearing protective body armour that shields them from most small arms fire. This is represented by the Resilient rule that states that troops with this ability have a damage value of 6+ when being fired upon. This changes in hand-to-hand combat where they use their normal experience level but it should be noted that heavy infantry in all four lists must be bought as veterans. Though there are other heavy infantry flavoured units that have the “tough” rule, I will not be focusing on these units today.

Konflikt '47 - Why You Should Be Trying Out Konflikt '47 (From A Rules Perspective)

I am sure that by this point, you have seen the myriad of articles and images from and heard about Warlord and Clockwork Goblin's newest addition to the Bolt Action family of games, Konflikt '47. Konflikt '47 is set in a world where history has taken a hard turn during the height of WW2 (1944) and now 3 years after that, the war looks very similar and yet very different from what we would expect from that era. You might call the setting "Weird War," and that alone turns some people, off but let me tell you why I think you should consider taking a closer look at this new game.

To start with the "skin" of the game does combine wild science fiction gone mad with what actually happened back in the forties, but this should not put off the strict historically minded of us. The  accuracy of the historical aspects of the game have been carefully considered by the authors, who are clearly aware of the intricate details of the conflict. Although the alternate timeline of the game is fantastic; it is also logical, plausible (if this level of technology was dropped into the middle of WW2) and comfortable. This alternate history "feels" right. But this is all window dressing for what excites me most about the game. The rules.

Konflikt '47 - Rulebook review and first impressions!

If you play any of Warlord Games' systems like Bolt Action and don't live under a rock, you will have heard about their newest game, Konflikt '47 made in conjunction with Clockwork Goblin Miniatures and Osprey Publishing. There has been a bit of hub-bub about this game recently, as it takes the great Bolt Action system and throws in a dash of the weird, bringing in 'mechs and power-armoured infantry alongside zombies and werewolves. Well we are going to crack open the Konflikt (forever known as K47 from this point onwards) rulebook and delve into how the rules differ from Bolt Action, while looking at some of the new units you can expect.

Bolt Action - K47 - Getting some German vehicles ready to roll, or walk, out!

To say that the team at the Bolt Action Alliance are a little excited about the impending release of Konflict 47 (K47) is an understatement. Walkers, jet packs and heavily armoured soldiers fighting against or along side occult figures like Vampires, Zombies and Werewolves just sounds like a great amount of fun. We recognize that it will not be for everyone but we hope that there will be a lot of crossover and it can sit alongside the more traditional game, perhaps even bringing in some new fans to the greater Bolt Action genre.

Bolt Action - Unofficial Unit: Canadian Skink

In March 1943, the Canadian Army Technical Development Board approved the development of the Skink anti-aircraft tank. Designed on the Grizzly chassis (the Canadian built version of the M4A1 Sherman) it mounted four 20mm Polsten cannons in an enclosed turret and was planned to be a mobile anti-aircraft platform to defend the Canadian ground forces against the dreaded Luftwaffe. Keeping with tradition of naming Canadian tanks after animals, it was named the Skink after Ontario's only native lizard.
