Bersaglieri vs Maori in Dust Up

Sean and I got in a 1500 point desert battle the other night. I ran Italians and he ran Maori (sure they don't LOOK like Maori... they were just mean New Zealanders?). The mission was DUST UP.

DEPLOYMENT AND TURN ONE

In Dust up, each player gets half on the board. Sean started with his RA Battery, his Shermans, and a Rifle Platoon. He is deployed in the top left. The objectives in Sean's deployment zone are in the top right between the two buildings, and near the center of the board just to the right of the large hill.

Steven started with the large Bersaglieri platoon, the 75s, and the M14s. The M14s are just out of frame in the center right of the table. Objectives in Steven's deployment zone are in the very top left of his deployment (to the right of the small building in the center of the table), and due "south" from that straddling the olive grove.

Steven's Deployment

M14/41s- Fearless Vets baby!

The Bersaglieri who spend 4 turns trying to dig in!

Maori rifles deploy in a grove.

The Royal Artillery corps.

Shermans ready to roll out.

The Italians double time their M14s forward, ready to receive the British reserves. The 75s dig in, and the Bersaglieri begin their very slow process of digging as well.

The M14s keep close and move quickly.

Shermans move out!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

ITALIANS
none

MAORI
none

TURN TWO

The Italians do absolutely nothing except try to dig the Bersaglieri.

A 25 pounder takes a shot on the Bersaglieri after digging in, and smokes an elefentino!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

ITALIANS
CT Bersaglieri: 1x 47mm AT gun

MAORI
none

TURN THREE

No Italian reserves arrive. The M14s spread out a bit.

25 pounders fire a stonk on the 75s and Bersaglieri, knocking out an HMG!

Stuarts arrive from reserve!

Shermans continue to close in on the M14s.

1 M14 goes up in smoke!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

ITALIANS
CT Bersaglieri: 1x 47mm AT gun, 1x HMG
M14s: 1 tank destroyed

MAORI
none

TURN FOUR

The M14s blow their return fire- only bailing 2 Stuarts!

Suddenly a Maori platoon arrives from reserve directly behind the M14s! 1 Stuart remounts from bailed out.

More artillery fire pins the Bersaglieri (who finally dug in!) and the 75s.

Combined fire from the Stuarts and Shermans knocks out 2 more M14s and bails another!

The Maori assault to mop up!

But the maori are untrained in the use of sticky bombs, and score an "own goal!". The one remaining Italian tanker, being fearless, decides he must push back! He scores a hit, and forces the maori back. The 2 remaining M14s (one being bailed) fight on!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

ITALIANS
CT Bersaglieri: 1x 47mm AT gun, 2x HMGs
M14s: 3 tanks destroyed

MAORI
"right" Maori platoon- 3 rifle/MG stands

TURN FIVE

Still no Italian reserves arrive.

The Italian 75s range in on the Stuarts, and despite their poor firepower, knock one out!

Bersaglieri let loose on the Maori, gutting the platoon.

The one active M14 driver (the other having failed to remount) assaults the survivor, finishing off the platoon!

Another barrage from the 25 pounders knocks out the 2iC, who takes command of the Bersaglieri unit. But miraculously he rises from crater as an unknown hero!

Shermans and Stuarts knock out the bailed M14. The one remaining tank again passes motivation and fights on!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

ITALIANS
CT Bersaglieri: 1x 47mm AT gun, 2x HMGs
M14s: 4 tanks destroyed

MAORI
"right" Maori platoon- DESTROYED
Stuarts: 1 tank destroyed

TURN SIX

And again, no Italian reserves.

The lone M14 double times it back to friendly lines.

The 75s do a repeat bombardment bailing a Stuart!

Which forces a morale check, that the Stuarts fail.

A fresh Maori platoon arrives on the Italian right!

As the other Maori platoon and the Shermans move forward to envelop the Bersaglieri.

Maori threaten the objective.

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

ITALIANS
CT Bersaglieri: 1x 47mm AT gun, 2x HMGs
M14s: 4 tanks destroyed

MAORI
"right" Maori platoon- DESTROYED
Stuarts: DESTROYED

TURN SEVEN

In a massive gush, Italian reserves arrive! The Semovente, the understrength Bersaglieri Platoon, and the Mortars all appear at once! Furthermore, Sean's 25 pounders are deployed so far forward, they are in assault range!

Semoventes prepare to open up.

Bersaglieri mortars get set up to fire.

On the right flank, Bersaglieri light into the fresh Maori platoon.

While the lone M14 pushes through the olive grove to join the Bersaglieri in opening up on the center Maori platoon! The 75s previously laid smoke on the Shermans.

Fire from the elefentinos and Semovente knocks out 2 guns.

The Semoventes charge!

And a battery is wiped out!

Time is clearly running out now for the British, and so they launch a desperate attack!

A Battery Opens up on the bunched up Semoventes, causing no real harm.

The center Maori platoon, being the only one to unpin, launches a desperate assault on Bersaglieri and the 75s. The M14 was bailed by sherman fire, but again passed morale. The Maori are pinned in defensive fire, and gutted severely. They then fail their morale check and break.

At this point, with 2 strong units in the Maori's deployment area, the maori being below half, and the night getting late, Sean calls it.

6-1 for the Italians.
