British Rifles vs German Schutzen in Witch's Cauldron

Tom and I played our first game from Hellfire and Back. We decided to try the new mission "Witch's Cauldron".

DEPLOYMENT AND TURN ONE


The view from the British side. The British start with 2 Rifle Platoons on the board and the 25 pounder battery in immediate ambush.

The first objective is on the rocky hill in the south. The 2nd is in the channel between the ridge lines. The Germans start with the Panzer III unit (just out of frame to the left), the 105s (on the rocky hill in the top left) and the light panzers on the right.

Overhead. Rommel is in the bottom left just behind the Panzer III unit.

The 25 pounders spring their immediate ambush!


The 25s fire a barrage! The Panzer IIIs are unaffected!


The Light Panzers line up on the ridge and pepper the 25 pounders with MG fire.


The Panzer IIIs roll forward!


The 10.5s fire on the 25 pounders, pinning them down!


The 25 pounders are pinned, but suffer no further damage!

TURN ONE SUMMARY

BRITISH: The 25 pounders range in on the Panzer IIIs but do no damage.
GERMANS: The Panzers press from both fronts.


TURN TWO




The 25 Pounders range in and knock out a Panzer III! Ouch!


The Panzers continue to press the British, getting dangerously close to the hill!


The Light Panzers knock out a 25 pounder with MG fire.

GERMANS
Panzer IIIs: 1 tank


TURN TWO SUMMARY

BRITISH: The 25 pounders knock out a Panzer III. The infantry keep their heads down.
GERMANS: The tanks move forward with guns blazing! They knock out a 25 pounder with MG fire.


TURN THREE




The 25 Pounders keep hounding the Panzers.


The first of the German reserves arrive. They rush forward to back up the panzers.


The Light Panzers keep shooting and scooting.


The 10.5cm battery ranges in on "The Hill".


The Germans continue to press the hill.

TURN THREE SUMMARY

BRITISH: The 25 Pounders again fire a barrage on the Panzers, but do no damage.
GERMANS: A Schutzen platoon arrives from reserve.


TURN FOUR




The British infantry charges forth under a smoke barrage! But even with the CO urging them, they fail to assault the armor!


But the Germans seize the initiative and assault with the tanks!


Despite British Bulldog, the brits pull back to the safety of the hill.

BRITISH
25 Pounder Battery: 2 guns
Hill Rifle Platoon: 3 stands


GERMANS
Panzer IIIs: 1 tank


TURN FOUR SUMMARY

BRITISH: The infantry fails to assault the armor under a smoke barrage.
GERMANS: The Panzer Is knock out another gun. The Panzers assault the rifle platoon which falls back to the hill as more reserves arrive behind the light Panzers.


TURN FIVE




British reserves arrive! The Matildas risk moving at the double, and none break down!


Another reserve arrives and double times towards the artillery!


The 2 remaining 25 pounders fire on the mass of infantry and tanks and knock out another Panzer III!


The British Rifles open up on the Schutzen, whittling them down.


The Panzers risk an assault through the gap!


And in another moment of courage the remaining Matilda assaults up the rough hill and knocks out another British rifle stand!


The Light Panzer platoon turns incredibly sour! The platoon is run off and the gap is blocked!

GERMANS
Light Panzers: DESTROYED
Panzer IIIs: 2 tanks
Schutzen I: 4 stands


TURN FIVE SUMMARY

BRITISH: Reserves arrive!
GERMANS: The Panzer Is slam themselves through the gap in the ridge line, but are annihilated by the British Rifles! The Schutzen, Rommel, and the remaining Matilda continue to press the hill, surrounding the objective!


TURN SIX




The British Rifles that arrived from reserve assault the 10.5cm battery!


The British Rifles hold the objective very tenuously, but instead fire on the approaching schutzen!


The Matildas assault the Schutzen on the right flank.


The Matildas assault!


The Schutzen break off, and the British solidly hold the right flank.


After eliminating the 10.5s, the reserve british rifles consolidate their position.


German reserves arrive and double time it to the hill!


After a long and bloody assault, the Germans hold the objective but at the cost of the schutzen platoon!

TURN SIX SUMMARY

BRITISH: The British wipe out the 105s! The Matildas lock down the British right flank.
GERMANS: reserves keep being slammed into the hill! The one remaining Matilda holds the objective and the British are on the ropes!


TURN SEVEN




The remnants of the British rally and prepare to assault Rommel and the Matilda! But even the company commander cannot urge them to do so!


The Matildas hound the schutzen who fall back to safety.


The British Rifle platoon in the ravine hoofs it towards the hill which is inevitably going to fall!


COME ON LADS, YOU WANT TO LIVE FOREVER?!?! The CO is met with silence.


The Schutzen swarm forward!


Again the Schutzen hold the hill! But the Matilda AND rommel bog down. The Schutzen suffer more in the assault than expected!

The Germans again hold the objective, but the British reinforcements are not far behind!


The reserve rifle platoon assaults the hill and knocks out Rommel, the Matilda, and the reserve rifle platoon!

With that the Germans are well below half with no CO to roll motivation!
