SS Panzergrenadiers vs US Glider Troops (brief AAR)

Joe and Sean played a game last night at my place. I didn't do a great job of keeping up with the battle enough to provide a proper battle report, but I did snap a good amount of pictures. Joe may do a better job over at Lead, Paint, and the general, but I'll go ahead and dump the pictures I took here.

First of all, the battle was completely randomized- rolled for the mission (came up with Trench Fight- which was awesome since it was Joe's first experience with fortifications and Sean's first experience attacking them), and also rolled for the German list that Sean would be running. Sean rolled up the 12.SS Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers supported by Brummbars!

12.SS Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers (Fearless vet)
  • HQ + 2 Panzerfausts + Panzerschreck
  • Gepanzerte Panzergrenadier Platoon w/ Panzerfaust
  • Gepanzerte Panzergrenadier Platoon w/ Panzerfaust
  • SS Scout Platoon (3 teams in kubelwagons)
  • SS Panzer Platoon (4x Panzer IV H)
  • Assault Tank Platoon (4x Heer Brummbars)(CV)
  • Armored Rocket Battery (Heer Panzerwerfers w/ crew)(CV)

US Glider Rifles
  • HQ + 3 Bazookas
  • Glider Rifle Platoon
  • Glider Rifle Platoon
  • Engineers + 3 Bazookas
  • Weapons Platoon (LMGs attached out)
  • 81mm Mortar Platoon
  • 5x Shermans (from 2ID- CV)
  • M10 Tank Destroyers (CV)

Joe starts with a Rifle Platoon and the Engineers on the board. His Shermans are in ambush.

The preliminary bombardment isn't terribly effective, although two ambushing shermans are knocked out.

The Americans hunker down in their freshly dug defensive positions.

A recently captured bunker is repurposed and filled with yanks.

SS Scouts head out first, ready to probe the enemy lines.

Panzergrenadiers zip down a narrow lane.

A T intersection is secured.

The line holds, but casualties are taken!

Panzergrenadiers debus and move into a yard

HMGs open fire!

Brummbars continue to push forward

The Panzergrenadiers on the right debus in the face of HMG fire from the Engineers

Panzer IVs crash through the Church's plot

One Brummbar noses forward, crushing wire beneath it.

Shermans spring their ambush!

Despite being in range, the Americans cannot get motivated to jump out of their trenches and knock out the brummbar!

Panzergrenadiers get to the wire, ready to cut it

The halftracks cover their advance with MG fire

The American left flank is also threatened

On the American right, the wire is cleared!

The Panzer IVs, under fire from the Shermans, move forward firing wildly on the entrenched Americans.

...
And here is where I stopped getting pictures. You'll have to check Joe's blog for the rest of the pics!

In summary, the Germans broke through the lines and pushed the Americans back, but the guys ran out of time as Joe had to head home.
