British Heavy Armoured Squadron vs German Panzergrenadiers

Ted is a relative newcomer to our crew, but he's a very welcome addition quickly learning the ropes! We were able to catch up over the weekend and get a game in. I let Ted pick his poison after making a Motor Infantry list and an Armoured Squadron list. Ted knew his company was somewhat weaker against tanks, and so decided to man up and face the tank list. As this was a test for the upcoming I-95 tournament, we did 1500 points and the mission was Dust Up.

Steven's British Heavy Armoured Squadron
  • HQ (2x Grants)
  • 3x Grants

TURN 1

The board. I started with motor infantry and Grants (in the top right quadrant). My Humber IIIs used their recon move to sweep wide to the left. Ted started with panzergrenadiers and Panzer IIIs (displayed in the bottom left). The nebelwerfers are just out of frame in the bottom left.

Nebelwerfers set up.

The British defensive line.

a unit of Grants as well the command take up position in a palm grove.

British motor infantry hold the rocky hill.

Humbers go "swanning about in the blue"

Panzergrenadiers and attached HMGs spread out to hold both objectives.

Another shot of Ted's nebelwerfers.

Ted's Panzergrenadiers:Panzer IIIs swing wide to the British left, avoiding fire of the Grants.

TURN 2

Note the Panzer IIIs in the south and the armored cars in the west!

Armored cars move dangerously close to the panzergrenadiers!

The Panzers weave from cover to cover, preparing to strike.

The situation on the right.

TURN 3

Turn 3.

Crusaders arrive from reserve, and head back towards the British deployment zone.

Humbers exploit a gap in the German lines to race behind! The nebelwerfers are caught in the open.

And the entire unit is seen off by MG fire!

The Humbers consolidate behind the German lines.

The Panzers strike... but completely miss their targets.

Ted's Panzergrenadiers:The Panzers strike, but the Grants are well concealed.

TURN 4

Turn 4.

The Grants open fire. 2 Panzer IIIs go up in flames.

Panzergrenadiers arrive from reserve just in assault range of the grants!

More Panzergrenadiers arrive.

The Panzer IIIs knock out 3 tanks and bail another! The Panzergrenadiers assault, but the one lone grant is determined to repulse them.

The fight goes on for a silly amount of rounds.

Finally the Grant pushes the panzergrenadiers back, but then quis the field!

The freshly arrived troops stormtrooper up on the hill from their transports.

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Steven's British Heavy Armoured Squadron
  • HQ: DESTROYED
  • Grant Platoon: DESTROYED

Turn 5

Two grant troops arrive from reserve and immediately prepare to assault. The Humbers move up from behind.

The first troop crashes into the panzergrenadiers!

The Germans counter attack

One grant goes up in flames, sending the troop back! so the 2nd troop charges in!

The 2nd troop also loses a single tank, and again fails to counter attack! It's up to the Humbers now.

The Humbers dispatch the remaining defenders.

The British secure the objective.

  • none

TURN SUMMARY
Steven's British Heavy Armoured Squadron:2 Grant troops arrive from reserve and immediately slam into the panzergrenadiers on the objective. It takes assaults from both Grant troops and the Humbers, but finally the objective is secured.

Ted's Panzergrenadiers:The panzergrenadier unit holding the objective breaks, bringing the CO and 2iC along with them and leaving their objectives unguarded.

My reserves arrived just when I needed them! Ted was bearing down on me with 2 tanks and 2 panzergrenadier units- far more than my motor infantry could hold. The real stars of this match are the Humbers! They exploited a gap in the line and knocked out Nebelwerfers before launching the winning assault.
