Soviet Guards Strelkovy vs German Grenadiers

After Luke and his wife came over to very generously help us paint our nursery (AFTER buying us the paint as their gift to Isabelle!) Luke and I decided to get in a test game for the upcoming Guns of August tournament. The lists were 1200 points, and the mission was Domination.

TURN TWO

SU-85s open up on "red" grenadier platoon, knocking out 2 stands!


The horde moves into a copse of woods.


Mortars range in on the left strelkovy, knocking out 1 stand.


HMGs open up on the central horde, knocking out 1 stand.

TURN TWO SUMMARY

SOVIETS: The reds continue to advance. The SU-85s remain stationary to fire on the grenadiers, and score a kill! GERMANS: HMGs, mortars, and grenadiers open fire causing light casualties.

TURN THREE

The strelkovy continues to advance under cover of the SU-85s who knock out 2 more grenadier stands.


The central soviets hunker down in the woods.


With a smoke barrage shutting down the SU-85s' sight, the Panzer IVs open up on the strelkovy scoring one more kill.


The T-70 nabs an objective and opens up on the strelkovy!

TURN THREE SUMMARY

SOVIETS: SU-85s continue to open up on the grenadiers. The left-most strelkovy continue forward, while the central strelkovy hang back. GERMANS: smoke protects the Panzer IVs from the SU-85s as they pepper the strelkovy with MG fire. The HMGs begin repositioning to back the grenadiers from the pending assault.

TURN FOUR

The SU-85s maneuver around the smoke screen (which is temporarily removed for maneuver- forgot to replace it for the pic!). The Battalion commander keeps them in command! They fail to score a hit on the Panzer IVs. The infantry move forward and are surprised to find the Panzer IVs focusing their efforts on them! The strelkovy take casualties from the Panzers' MGs, putting them below the critical 15 teams.


The Grenadiers charge the left strelkovy as they are isolated by distance and smoke and knock out 2 stands!


The central strelkovy attempt to dig in but fail!

TURN FOUR SUMMARY

SOVIETS: The left strelkovy advances as the SU-85s reposition to shoot on the panzer IVs. GERMANS: Panzer IVs open up on the strlekovy, and knock out a flame thrower team! The left-most strelkovy is now below 15 teams.

TURN FIVE

The SU-85s and infantry now push aggressively forward!


Meanwhile both strelkovy platoons prepare to assault! See the small stand with a white dot? That's the HMGs' platoon command team. Luke was very concerned about assaulting him for some reason…


The HMGs have one gun knocked out to rifle fire, but are not pinned. The horde assaults anyway. We determine this is "stress testing" the strelkovy.


18 hits later from the unpinned Grenadiers and HMGs, and the strelkovy is sufficiently stress-tested.


The Grenadiers and HMGs again open up, causing severe casualties across the front.


The Panzer IVs are ready to defend their position with the help of the mortars. Unfortunately they only bail a single SU-85!

TURN FIVE SUMMARY

SOVIETS: The soviets fling themselves on the guns in the center, suffering horrific casualties. The SU-85s press the Panzers. GERMANS: The Germans let the soviets have it, putting both strelkovy units below half strength. They still have plenty of bite though! The Panzers find themselves in a rough spot.

TURN SIX

2 SU-85s remain still, 2 inch out of the smoke.


The Panzer IVs suffer horrifically. However, the 2 bailed tanks do stay in the fight!


The soviets align themselves very cleverly to assault the Grenadiers without bringing in the HMGs. The Grenadiers can only muster5 shots in defensive fire…


But all 5 hit, stopping the assault. Luke then fails all 5 infantry saves!

At this point, his units are weakened despite his near armor superiority, and with the time limit approaching Luke calls the game.
