US 2nd Cav vs KG Peiper (Fighting Withdrawal)


It had been a while since Sean and I played a game of FoW. I was wanting to try out the Cav Recon and Sean is still loving fearless trained panthers and so decided to run Peiper. We rolled for the mission and came up with Fighting Withdrawal.

All of the US support is Confident Veteran.

      DEPLOYMENT SUMMARY
      Sean's KG Peiper: Sean puts his Pumas and Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers moving through the town in the West. Panthers with the HQ panther in the East. Peiper and the Panzer IVs in the center.

      Steven's 2nd Cav Recon: Towed TDs and a cav recon patrol along with the 2iC hold the town objective. Towed TDs' security section deploys near the church yard. Cav Recon and M18s hold the center while Chaffees hold the east. Priests deployed in ambush.


      TURN 1

      Panthers on Sean's left push the tank destroyer security section hard.


      Pumas push the objective, sending the US 2iC disengaging backwards.

      Panzergrenadiers and the 2iC ready to keep pushing.

      Panzers move into the woods, but 2 bog!

      The Towed TDs reveal their ambush

      They knock out 2 Pumas and a panzergrenadier halftrack. Bazookas move into the church to contest the objective.

      Hold!

      A halftrack goes up in flames, killing the occupants

        TURN 1 SUMMARY
        Sean's KG Peiper: Sean pushes forward on the two outer objectives.

        Steven's 2nd Cav Recon: Towed TDs deploy, nailing 2 pumas and a halftrack. The panzergrenadiers fail their motivation to keep their halftracks around and are left on foot!

        Panthers are behind smoke fired by the chaffees in turn 1.

        How can that bridge support that weight?!

        Peiper himself races across the central bridge

        Panzergrenadiers press forward along with the 2iC and remaining Puma.

        And here they come. Sean forgot

        Boom! Ouch. Every panther- gone.

        Just as the Chaffees reach the road through the wheat.

        Steven's 2nd Cav Recon: M18s pop and rip apart the Panthers on the right. Chaffees bring down one Panzer IV.

        The Puma nails an M8 Armored Car.

        Panzergrenadiers move into buildings

        The US responds by ambushing with priests.

        The speedy M18s hunt down the Panzer IVs.

        While the Chaffees swarm Peiper

        The Panzer IVs are wiped out.

        Peiper is bailed but not killed

        Priests open up with their 105s, nailing 2 stands.

        BOOM!

        TURN 3 SUMMARY
        Sean's KG Peiper: Sean is in go for broke mode. Panzergrenadiers and the 2iC race forward in the town, with the Panzergrenadiers successfully moving into buildings.

        Steven's 2nd Cav Recon: M18s and Priests bring more pain to the Kampfgruppe leaving Sean with few options.

        At this point Sean's will to fight is gone. The Cav Recon is wildly victorious in their first outing, and we are both a little bummed that the game was quick and not all that exciting.
