With Nuts out and in our hands, Joe and I decided to get a game in! Please don't re-read that first sentence. I was surprised to learn that Joe "N00B Zone" Messerle has yet to get a full game of V3 in! So we set out to play this one somewhat differently. I played the Germans, but fully announced my intentions and thought process for every move and placement. Then, subsequently, I guided Joe and helped him (from a rules perspecrive) how to accomplish things within the framework of V3. The tactics and decisions were still his to make- he was still in the driver's seat. Honestly, I think this made for a very fun game for both of us! The mission is Counter Attack. |

Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV) | Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV)
|
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV): Joe sends a flanking force of Shermans and Armored Rifles, while his main attack is orchestrated with Armored Rifles, Engineers, Mortars, and Tank destroyers. Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV): Being a largely static force, most of the Volksgrenadiers get to start on the board. The Schutzen deploy in a tight formation, hoping to repel any potential assaults while the Sturm platoon prepares to move out to the 2nd objective. Hetzers are in ambush. |
TURN 1
Armored Rifles lead the way! |
TDs move up. |
Almost immediately, the Stugs show up from reserve! |
Joe has smoked the Pak 40s, who also stay gone to ground this turn. |
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV) | Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV) |
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV): Joe's flanking force moves out. Everyone else opens up on the Schutzen, pinning them down but causing no casualties. Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV): The Sturm platoon moves out towards the 2nd objective. Stugs arrive from reserve and bail a US halftrack, but do no lasting damage. One of the recon teams moves aggressively forward to block the movement of the TD security section. |
TURN 2
Turn 2 |
The security section opens up on a recon team, wiping them out! |
Shermans move out! Shots miss wildly, but one smoke round lands on target. |
Joe's flanking force with the old man himself. |
Armored Rifles sneak forward out of the wheat |
The Sturm platoon reaches the objective. |
With a full Armored Rifle platoon and 5 Shermans coming their way, the Stugs pull back to cover the objective. |
Pak 40s open up on the Armored rifles... |
Along with some ambushing Hetzers |
Hetzers Gonna Hetz |
The Schutzen then open up on the survivors of the destroyed halftracks, killing them to a man. The command and LMG halftracks both stick around. |

|
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV): Everyone again opens up on the Schutzen causing 1 casualty. The flank force rolls forward, smoking a Stug. Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV): Hetzers and Pak 40s tear into the Armored rifles, killing 3 halftracks and all of their occupants as the Sturm platoon reaches their objective. 3 of 4 Hetzers bog trying to stormtrooper! |
TURN 3
Turn 3 |
Engineers move out! |
Shermans race forward and bail out the trailing Stug. |
And knock out the 2nd stand from the recon platoon, breaking the platoon! |
3 of 4 Hetzers bogged when stormtroopering in turn 2. The Engineers aren't gonna get another chance like this. The pak 40s again open up on the Armored Rifles, this time eliminating the platoon. |
The trailing Stug pulls back and wipes out a Sherman. |
Sturm and Stugs protect an objective. |
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV)
| Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV)
|
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV): Engineers and Shermans move up pressing both flanks. Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV): Sturm and stugs move to protect the objective. The Schutzen on the right elect to stay gone to ground since they failed to unpin. |
TURN 4
Turn 4 |
Joe blankets the Schutzen in smoke. |
And launches an assault! (smoke removed for ease) |
10 shots needing 5s. My defensive fire drives off the assault! |
So close... |
But so far. |
Stugs push into the tree line |
With the Armored Rifles gone and the Engineers gutted, the Schutzen assault! |
And after a bloody combat, both units are eliminated! |
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV)
| Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV)
|
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV): Joe launches a well set up assault on the right, but it's just barely stopped by defensive fire! Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV): The Schutzen counter attack the Engineers, but the defensive fire is heavy! They make it through, but suffer high casualties. Both units flee! |
TURN 5
Turn 5. |
M10s pop, intending to put a hurt on the Hetzers. |
Sherman 76s and Armored Rifles prepare to assault the other objective. |
Mortars pin down the pak 40s. |
The other objective is close! |
In a colosally bone-headed move, the Sturm advance, hoping to assault after the Stugs at least bail the Shermans! |
But Stugs and Paks fail to scratch the shermans leaving the Sturm in the open. |
After totally whiffing, the Hetzers punish the TDs, annihilating the platoon. |
Burning M10s. |
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV)
| Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV)
|
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV): Joe's Armor and infantry move up, ready to assault the objective. M10s pop on the Hetzers, but only bail one. Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV): The Sturm foolishly move forward, while Stugs and Pak 40s whiff on the Shermans. |
TURN 6
Turn 6 |
Armored Rifles come out swinging as the Shermans gut the Sturm platoon. |
The Armored Rifles assault! |
Even pulling in the Paks... |
But are pinned by defensive fire with exactly 5 hits! |
As the Sturm hang on for dear life, the Stugs knock out both of the long barrel Sherman 76s! |
The Hetzers shift to the other objective, and now it's looking tough for the yankees! |
The Armored rifles are down but not out. |
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV)
| Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV)
|
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV): Joe launches a well calculated assault into the Sturm and Pak 40s, but again is just barely pinned by defensive fire! Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV): The return fire is devastating. 2 Shermans down, and the Armored Rifles take more losses. |
TURN 7
Last turn |
The Armored Rifles try one last time, tightening up their assault and giving me less defensive fire. |
But again the Armored Rifles are stopped by defensive fire, and find themselves severely depleted. |
The Hetzers now roll forward tearing into the Armored Rifles. |
At this point, at the bottom of turn 7 with only 2 shermans and a handful of Armored Rifle teams, Joe decides to throw in the towel. |
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV)
| Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV)
|
Joe's US 4th AD Armored Rifles (CV): The Armored Rifles try once more to assault, but disappointing shooting from the Shermans leaves the Sturm with no further losses than before. Steven's Volksgrenadiers (CV): Everything focuses fire on the Armored Rifles as the Sturm dig in. The fire is effective, and Joe is left with too little to go on. |
A very close fought 4-3 to the Germans. Great game with Joe, and a fun introduction to version 3 to our buddy JMezz! |
