While I was at BFHQ I didn't have much time for gaming, but finally on Saturday Mike was kind enough to head down to the studio and play! Mike was eager to try out his US Engineers. Despite rarely doing any good with Fearless Trained German armor, I decided to try KG Peiper one more time. The mission was Dust Up. |
KG Peiper
| US Engineers
|
SETUP AND DEPLOYMENT
The board. |
Mike's artillery park |
Mike's infantry starts in the buildings |
Panzers! |
Mike's "close" objective |
KG Peiper
| US Engineers
|
KG Peiper: I start with Panthers and Panzer IV Js. My plan was to strike hard on the objective with Panzergrenadiers and Panzer IVs when they arrived, while my starting forces would be purely defensive. US Engineers: Mike started with 2 Engineer platoons, 105s, AAA, and Towed TDs. With 10 platoons he was nicely able to frontload what starts on the board, with quite a formidable force in place! |
TURN 1
Panzer IVs charge forward! |
The Panzer IVs aggressively go after the towed TD jeeps |
Panthers ready to respond to Mike or push any advantages |
Two Recon jeeps go down, but a hail of bazooka fire takes down 2 Panzer IVs. Ouch! |
The village |
Skorzeny Commandos |
KG Peiper
| US Engineers
|
KG Peiper: Panzer IVs rush forward to go after the towed TDs. Skorzeny Commandos move to shut down Mike's reserves funneling them into a killzone. US Engineers: Mike's infantry moves forward from building to building. Bazookas take down 2 Panzer IVs- d'oh I forgot how fragile trained Panzer IVs are! |
TURN 2
Turn 2 |
Panthers redeploy |
Towed TDs spring their ambush with no viable targets |
KG Peiper
| US Engineers
|
KG Peiper: Panthers move to the other flank to prepare for Mikes reserves. Panzer IVs pull back. US Engineers: Engineers advance further into the village while towed TDs spring their ambush sending the bazookas forward. |
TURN 3
Turn 3 |
KG Peiper
| US Engineers
|
KG Peiper: The Towed TDs keep the German panzers largely nailed in place and so not much happens. US Engineers: Likewise an uneventful turn with only the towed TD bazooka crew moving forward. |
TURN 4
The board. Skorzeny commandos attempt to block Mike's reserves from entering near the wheatfield, but both fail their skill tests and are removed. |
And so Mike's infantry gets into the wheat! D'oh! |
Panthers move up and find a slew of booby traps! |
The Rifle Platoon |
KG Peiper
| US Engineers
|
KG Peiper: Still no reserves for the Kamfgruppe! US Engineers: Mike's infantry platoon arrives, doubling through the wheat. |
TURN 5
Turn 5 |
This is it! We need to pin down the defenders! 36 MG shots needing 6s. The odds are only slightly with me- big gamble! |
The panzers are finding themselves surrounded |
I fail to pin down the defenders, and the return fire is punishing! That was my shot, I coulda been a contender! |
Ouch! |
The other flank isn't looking so hot either! |
KG Peiper
| US Engineers
|
KG Peiper: The assault is set up but falls on its face! US Engineers: Return fire is withering! |
TURN 6
Engineers in the wheat |
The Company Command Panther throws a track on a booby trap and then finds itself swamped! |
Meanwhile the left flank is completely cleared of Germans |
BOOM! |
The end! |
KG Peiper
| US Engineers
|
KG Peiper: The KG continues to get hammered on all sides losing a few more tanks. At this point it's time to call it- with 2 platoons gone and only 3 tanks remaining, it's clear the damn engineers have stopped us cold! US Engineers: Victory! |
This was a fun game, that I got to play using BF studio models! Good times. I continually learn the lesson that I just cannot make Fearless Trained german armor work for me. Sean O'Hara is the master, and I need to stop trying to cramp his style! |
