Rematch! KG Peiper vs US 2ID in Breakthrough


I have yet to hit my stride with Fearless Trained German Armor. In fact, I'm only playing them here because Luke and I wanted a refight of our game featuring these forces to try the new Tank Destroyer rules! Let's see if I can finally unlock the secrets of Fearless Trained German armor!

So this game is using both the new TD rules AND the random terrain generator from the V2 Hardback.

The mission is Breakthrough.

Luke's 2ID: Luke boxes me in with both big platoons of infantry.


TURN 1


Right off the bat I try to force my way through with my 2 King Tigers. The result is not pretty. I know I was overly aggressive but getting my King Tigers behind that big infantry blob would've been nice!



Luke's infantry moves out and tries to bazooka my Grille commander, but is punished by MGs for it.



Grilles fire on the infantry after having their gone to ground lifted by the pumas.

Steven's KG Peiper: Tigers try to force their way past the infantry, and lose a platoon in the process!

Luke's 2ID: West platoon moves forward to try and take bazooka shots on the grilles, but misses.

Steven's KG Peiper: Everything blazes away, but the trained recon fails to lift gtg so no casualties are caused. The picket line of bazookas has successfully kept me boxed in.

Luke's 2ID: Some movement, but that's about it.

Turn 3. No German reserves.

TURN 3 SUMMARY
Steven's KG Peiper: A very uneventful turn. We again blaze away, but cause no additional casualties. We need to keep the big infantry blobs occupied and hope our reserves show up!

Luke's 2ID: No return fire 57mm guns move down the stream towards the objectives.



TURN 4


Grilles move up, and knock out 2 stands! Thanks to the Pumas for lifting GTG.



Meanwhile the right flank can't mass enough to breakthrough just yet.

The rest of Luke's reserves arrive. The Tank Destroyer security section and the 57mm Guns move to secure the objective.

Steven's KG Peiper: Another turn of no reserves! We blaze away and score a few kills.

Luke's 2ID: Infantry holds while AT assets move to secure the objectives.

Finally, reserves!



The king bogs.



Stormtrooper moves the FJ forward, hugging the tree-lined banks.



Cav Recon moves to secure the objective.



An M8 Greyhound knocks out a Grille.

Steven's KG Peiper: FJ arrive from reserve.


Luke's 2ID: Recon rolls forward to contest the objective. West platoon moves out to make their way to the objectives.



TURN 6


Panzer IVs arrive from reserve, we're now all in.



The battle for the objective is on!



FJ move out



It takes the FJ and the Panzer IVs to knock out the cav recon.



Can the FJ hold?



The Tanks stormtrooper into the woods for protection.



Luke pops his TDs. (They were placed over 16" shortly after this picture)



The Towed TDs find it hard to place their ambush, only able to get 2 guns firing.



The mess of the towed TDs (remember this was played using Phil's first round of suggestions- it looks like the over 16" stipulation is gone again)



Everything focuses on the FJ.



They weather the shooting okay.



The Panzer IVs make it out with just one tank active.



The TDs assault! In the end it costs the FJ everything for the loss of 1 TD.

Steven's KG Peiper: The fight for the objective is on! FJs surround the objective, forcing the TDs into an assault.


Luke's 2ID: Luke focuses everything on the FJ and wipes them out!



TURN 7


The situation



Panzer IVs advance as quickly as possible!



Panzer IVs finish off the TDs



But the 57mm Guns take care of the Panzer IVs.



The Grilles, Pumas, and Panzer IVs all fail to stormtrooper- any of which would have been within 16" of the objective keeping me in the game. But I begin turn 8 with no one in 16" of the objective!

Steven's KG Peiper: The Panzer IVs go down but take the TDs with them. 3 failed stormtroopers and that's game!

Luke's 2ID: Luke's held the line and stopped the breakthrough!
4-3 to the Americans.


This has confirmed that I am not meant to drive Fearless Trained German armor. It's in that funny realm between elite and horde, that doesn't quite fit me! But Luke played it very well, making some very good decisions.

The new TD rules barely came into play, except for the towed TDs- though that rule seems to have changed now.

I must admit, we enjoyed playing on the terrain as it was randomly generated. Expect more games like that one!
